Racism is an issue in the book “The Hate U Give". Starr experiences the brutal realities of prejudice, sending her on an unfortunate journey. This essay talks about what kind of racism star dealt with. It is focussed on three important themes: stereotypes and prejudice, loss of identity, and systematic racism and injustices. I will show the significant impact of racism on Starr's life through these subjects. To begin, Identity is important in everyone’s life, but in Starr’s it is hard to determine what is hers, and what is not in Starr’s. When Starr's white friend Hailey makes disrespectful comments about the Black Lives Matter movement without fully comprehending the underlying concerns, she exhibits the influence of unconscious prejudices. This demonstrates how hasty judgements, and a lack of knowledge may lead to misconceptions and the perpetuation of negative stereotypes. Here are 3 quotes where Hailey is talking “This is awful” "That poor family.” “His son lost everything because he was trying to do his job and protect himself. His life matters too, you know?" (All from 248) because Hailey is displaying unconscious prejudice, because she is making a judgement without enough knowledge, The media has a key influence in moulding public opinion and creating the narrative surrounding major events and topics in the book. Media Influence, Selective Reporting, social media and Activism, Critique of Media Bias are all things that happened it the book multiple times. An example of this is in this quote "You hear all the stuff they're saying 'bout him on the news, calling him a thug and stuff, and you know that ain't Khalil.” (198) in this quote, proves the medias influence. "I know that some people call him a thug, but if you knew him, you'd know that wasn't the case at all”. (286-287) and in this quote, it explains that the media is just manipulating people into believing Khalil was bad. Through the experiences of several characters, the story investigates the idea of internalised racism the main idea being Chris' Ignorance. Chris, Starr's white boyfriend, shows a lack of awareness and comprehension of racial issues. Here is a quote “Most of Chris's house looks too fancy to live in.” (374).
