Dear Martin by Nic Stone is a poignant and gut-wrenching coming-of-age novel that tackles the harsh realities of racism and police brutality in America. In one key scene, we see the protagonist Justyce McAllister face the brunt of police brutality for simply trying to help his inebriated ex-girlfriend. The first character we meet is a young boy named Jordan Wabasse. Jordan is a 15 year old boy who is described as a quiet, polite kid who played hockey. Jordan is an example of the lack of care shown by the police in the Thunder Bay area. Jordan goes missing February 7, 2011, he is later found dead by a river near Thunder Bay on May 10, 2011, it takes the police 3 months to find and notify the public of jordans death.
It also explores the minority poor demonization to serve political ends contributing to minority unrealistic fear by the whites and to persistent police brutality problems against the minority communities. Videos taken by bystanders and by use of cams worn by officers and some placed in police cars show how the unarmed minorities were fatally shot by the police in minor confrontations in the 21st century.
