In Hawaiian Haleakala means “House of the sun.” Haleakala National Park is located in the island of Maui, Hawaii. “Maui’s two eroded volcanoes, Haleakala and West Maui, were once part of a large volcanic massif made up of six major volcanoes. When sea level was lower, during the coldest times of the Pleistocene Epoch, the six volcanoes formed one island.” Haleakala is a part of the Kea trend of volcanoes that includes West Maui, Mauna Kea and Kohala volcanoes.
Hawaii was in American interest since the early 1820’s. but at that time the Americans only cared about manifest destiny instead of colonizing in other continents especially with other baby countries directly on the border of America. In January 1893, the farmers of Hawaii revolted against the Hawaiian Queen Liliuokalani, at the same time, the citizens of Hawaii wanted the Americans to protect them, President William McKinley hadn’t given approval for the military to enter Hawaii, the marines stormed into Hawaii then raised the American flag. The queen was forced to renounce her throne, then it was up to the American government to decide where to go with the recent turn of events.
In Hawaii, in the 1800s, King Kamehameha the fourth and the planters needed to import foreign workers to make more sugar. Plantation life in Hawaii in the 1800s was not easy. They had harsh living conditions, working conditions were difficult to work in, and racial differences made it unfair. Hawaii, as a U.S. state, is guaranteed the freedom of all citizens and safe from foreign aggression. The Overthrow happened on January 17, 1893 against the Hawaiian Kingdom. With the support of U.S. Minister Stevens, American troops, and the Committee of Safety, Queen Liliuokalani was forced to surrender the throne to the U.S. The Overthrow was caused mainly byunjustified thanks to Minister Stevens, who brought American troops towards Iolani Palace. , Although their action was illegal, and they held the Queen at gunpoint which was immoral. Also, it was unwarranted sincedue to the queen wasbeing against war and bloodshed, andso she really had no choice but to give up her throne if she didn’t want the chaos of physical violence happening.
One of these is that they are considered to be a part of the same state, Hawaii. Kamehameha united the island chain to become the Kingdom of Hawaii, which was then taken over by the United States in 1893. The Big Island and Oahu were both a part of the old kingdom, now the 50th state of the United States, and are home to American citizens. In addition, both islands have a lot of tourism thanks to the many sights and attractions they contain. Every year, millions of tourists flock to both islands to see things like Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Kilauea, and Hilo.
Businessmen like Dole held imperialistic values to have unrestricted access to United States markets to bypass tariffs, like the McKinley Tariff passed in 1890 that raised the average duty on imports to almost fifty percent. In his letters, Minister Stevens credits Manifest Destiny as a reason why Hawaii should inevitably fall into the hands of the United States. Hawaii was a strategic location for the United States, as it housed a US Naval Base built on Pearl Harbor which provided access to Asia, a climate for developing sugar and pineapple plantations and a workforce that could easily be exploited for profit. Imperialism was a controversial idea that a nation can extend its power outward through means of diplomatic or military force. This often results in a shift of power from one major force currently in control to another. The people of that nation under control conflict may also experience wars, rebellions, or cultural destruction. Looking at some of these events, we see some positives and negatives of imperialistic action taken by the United States, and how it affected the nations imperialized by the United States. For starters, let’s look at Hawaii’s annexation.
A choice to either give up their family and country to work in labor or to stay home and live their normal lives. Some people from different countries would accept the first choice. They left their home, only bringing a few valuables to Hawaii and to work in a sugar plantation to fill the need of workers and to get a job in the booming business. But only in the future, people would know that plantation life in Hawaii in the 1800’s was very difficult for the immigrant workers. The living conditions in Hawaii were crowded and unsanitary, the working conditions were difficult, and race differences didn’t make a fair share of the jobs.
Invasive species have been a massive problem in Hawaii since the 17s and 18 hundreds. At first, it wasn’t that big of a deal, but the influx of invasive species grew over time, and it became a dangerous slippery slope. Species that were once alienated poured into Hawaii and destroyed indigenous species that had been native to Hawaii for a very long time. Since then, the Hawaiian people and advocates of removing invasive plants and animals have banded together to help remove these species. There has been a great global effort to remove invasive species in all places, but the hasty spread of them has made it almost impossible to eradicate a lot of them. I think my group can majorly help with this by educating you all about the seriousness of invasive species.
The United State’s annexation of Hawaii in 1898 led to the gradual destruction of the Hawaiian culture and the almost-extinction of native-born Hawaiians. The majority of the Hawaiian natives opposed the annexation of Hawaii and wanted to maintain their sovereignty. Although the Japanese could have taken over the Hawaiian islands if the United States had not, the annexation of Hawaii by the U.S. was unjustified because of the treatment of the monarchy and natives, the infringement of the natives’ self-established culture and government, and the natives’ overwhelming opposition to the U.S’s involvement in Hawaii. From 1795 to 1874, the Kamehameha Dynasty ruled over the kingdom of the Hawaiian islands. Up until the death of Kamehameha III, the U.S. had stayed out of interfering with the islands.
Analysis of Subject: This piece of art depicts a wonderful young lady wearing a light blue Mexican dress. Behind her, you see an exemplary darker guitar with hued lashes tied around the guitars strings. You can see cards laid out before her, and herself grasping cards perhaps a gambler who’s lost or one of those fortune tellers. The floor is comprised of blocks and along the far left, you see an extensive corroded vase.
The Cold War Anyone who lived during the 20th century would probably talk to you about the Cold War. The Cold War is one of the longest “conflicts” in U.S. History. Although it was a war liked by the people, the American Government should be praised for their actions during the Cold War. In February of 1945, after the allies remained victorious in the second World War, Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union held a conference about what to do with Germany.
Being very fortunate to travel, my wife and I decided to traveo to Hawaii. It was our first trip to that paradisaical place. The experience was fabulous from the very beginning. We flew to the island, and before the plane could land, we were amazed at beautiful blue and clarity of the sea. As we reached towards the beach we were able to see the bottom of the ocean.
