Others may say that the most effective way to respond to conflict is to stand up for what a person believes in, however, the best way that people can respond to a conflict is to have a positive outlook because it helps to not focus on the hardships in an individual’s life, alleviates stress, and affects other people 's attitude. However, when she suddenly changes her mind and agrees, her answer to Skeeter as to why she did it is that it was Hilly. During chapter 19, Yule May, Hilly’s maid, is imprisoned for stealing one of Hilly’s rings to help pay for her twin sons’ college tuition. Hilly, being the cruel person that she is, used her social connections to ensure that Yule May’s sentence was eight times longer than the usual petty theft sentence. Throughout the entire novel, Hilly Holbrook is one of the strongest characters, always knowing what her next move is. During this instance, it is very ironic that Yule May’s imprisonment was almost beneficial to Skeeter’s book and the black community. When Skeeter initially found out about Yule May, she says “If the maids were afraid to help us yesterday, I’m sure they’re terrified today”
Hilly was also very degrading towards others, and manipulative. “‘Like I’d even consider beating my friend Yule May Crookle out a her job. Miss Hilly think everbody just as two-faced as she is (Stockett 398).’” According to this quote, it is clear to see that Ms. Hilly does not have a good reputation in the black community. In the novel, Ms. Hilly is shown to be cruel to those who oppose her.
Hilly and some of Skeeter’s other friends were talking about making separate bathrooms for the help. Skeeter thinks it is rude to talk about people in that way, so she said, Skeeter’s comment shows that she does not want anyone to feel like less of a person because of someone else. This also explains that Skeeter treats everyone the same, like humans. Skeeter is talking with her friends and they keep bringing up how she needs to look for a spouse and get married. Skeeter did not pay any attention to the snippy remarks that her friends made about her.
Although she initially did not get a job in New York, she still wants to become a writer. Skeeter’s personality is comparable to Martin Luther King, in that she would do almost anything to achieve her dreams. Her long loved maid Constantine, the woman who practically raised her, inspires her to ignore what others say about her fluffy red hair or her height and just live for herself. Constantine’s continued support illustrates a flashback from Skeeter’s memory to the first time she was ever called ugly. Constantine says to

Before Skeeter left for college, she wanted the married life that her mom instilled in her but this quotation reveals that Skeeter is no longer one of the typical white women in Jackson , Mississippi who worried about marriage, having children and the perfect life. Later in the novel, we see another character development from Skeeter when she sees the unfair treatment of the blacks have totally changed ever since she left for college. One afternoon, Miss Hilly suggested that the black help should not use the same bathroom as the whites in their household as they spread diseases. Annoyed Skeeter responds loudly and says ' '
After Skeeter is addressed that way, “most turned their heads to see if Skeeter had the gall to show up”. The community had expected her to withdraw her participation because she had broken her mindless allegiance to Hilly Holbrook. By Skeeter breaking that allegiance to Hilly Holbrook she had broken any ties she could have had to the Caucasian community in Jackson. When Skeeter tried to associate with some Caucasian ladies at a Junior League meeting, all backs had formed a wall to her. When Skeeter tried to associate with childhood friends, a look of embarrassment would come across their face for having to be in her company.
(The Help, 2011) Inspired by this, Aibileen amends her fear and becomes the first of the maids to disclose her story to Skeeter. She realizes the danger that could result from her decision, but she embraces the risk and relies on her faith for guidance. Aibileen wrestled with just how much courage she would need to do what Skeeter had asked her to do, despite the "bitter seed" planted inside of her. The convergence of Skeeter and Aibileen is a result of the courage demonstrated by Aibileen. Subsequently, Aibileen muses to herself, “God says we need to love our enemies, it hard to do, but it can start by telling the truth."
