Some people believe that changes can be good, but others are impacted every moment changes are taken place. The city of Minneapolis represents diversity in communities, weather, buildings, and streets. In the book, “The Hiawatha” by David Treuer, introduces the changes in Minneapolis and the impact on a Native American family and others in the community. Simon, Betty, and Lincoln are affected economically, politically, and ethnically as changes are made in Minneapolis. They discover the destruction of important buildings and homes as time pass. Simon was in prison after killing his brother Lester. After his release, he had nowhere to stay or go to, besides the brown brick building of the Curtis Hotel on Third Avenue. Simon was given a job and a place to live at the Curtis Hotel by his parole officer after prison. When he returned home (Minneapolis) after a long visit from the Reservation up north, he used the designs on the sidewalks and streets to point him in the right direction to the hotel. Simon realized the weird distortion of the hotel, he looked up and realized nothing was there, "The Hotel is gone. Where the Curtis used to be there is nothing but a pile of rubble on the empty lot.” (228). This explains the political change taking place in Minneapolis by destroying the Curtis Hotel and replacing it with The Bokhara. The government, replacing the Curtis Hotel with The Bokhara made it seem like they were careless. The destruction of the hotel caused the loss of many jobs and homes for people. They were self-centered enough to destroy the Curtis Hotel without noticing how it will impact people like Simon. The government destructed the Curtis Hotel, “... he can’t bend his mind around the fact that he has no bed, his mattress buried under such a load of brick.” (228). It caused Simon to be homeless and jobless. This replacement of the Hotel doesn’t impact just Simon but it also impacts other people like One-two and Dougan who also had to find new
