The Hidden Truth: Horrors of War Over 17 million casualties and 20 million wounded soldiers resulted from one of the deadliest conflicts in human history, also known as World War 1. This brutal, detrimental conflict began on July 28, 1914 and dragged on for 4 dreadful years. Thousands enlisted into the war, willing to do an honorable service and fight for their country. Enlisting in the war is portrayed as a heroic and patriotic act, but it is not as glorious and honorable as it is said to be. These unfortunate enlistees unknowingly walked straight into their graves voluntarily by signing up for this vicious and cruel war. Those that never fought in the war remain unaware of the gruesome, untold details that came along with the ferociousness of the bloody war. These terrifying details remained covered up and lingered only in the minds of those who experienced the true horrors of war, haunting them for the rest of their lives, constant reminders of what they had been through. World War 1 didn’t end when the fighting stopped; the horrific details of this never-ending nightmare carried on and lived in each and every survivor. Those who made it out of the war were almost as unlucky as those who hadn’t; they had to live with the traumatizing memories for the rest of their lives. By the end of the war, many of the survivors desired death and the peacefulness as an escape from the unspeakable horror.
