I read The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book is a fantasy, fiction book much like most of Tolkien’s work. Although this book is intended for children, it is not toned down for them as there are some darker moments. The title describes the main character Bilbo Baggins who is a hobbit. Some versions of the book are subtitled There and Back Again. This describes the journey that takes place in the book and is also the name of the memoir Bilbo begins writing at the end of the book. The main characters of the book are the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, the wizard Gandalf, and the dwarves Thorin, Fili, Kili, Balin, Dwalin, Oin, Gloin, Dori, Nori, Ori, Bifur, Bofur, and Bomber. “Do you wish me a good morning, or is it a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?” This quote perfectly represents the books fanciful and light nature. I enjoyed the sense of adventure in this book. The grandness of the adventure was aided by the mention of the passage of time. By the time the story is done, a year has passed since the adventure’s start. I also enjoyed the books quick and light-heated nature of the story. Even the books darker moments had a whimsical twist. My only major criticism of the book is that I felt that some parts of the book where drawn out a little too long and that more time was spent of certain scenes than necessary. Some of the more archaic writing conventions can be difficult to understand at times. Those who enjoy a more upbeat and whimsical story but also want to experience a grand adventure would enjoy this book. I would recommend this book for its excellent plot and incredible imagery. However, parts of the book can be a bit hard too follow at times due to the different writing style of the time it was
