Steel Marks English 8 Mrs.solko 3/20/23 The Greedy people of The Hobbit People have always had a desire to get power. The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien has many characters that fit the role of succumbing to a kind of power. When Bilbo has to go on that treacherous journey to slay the dragon with the dwarves and regain all the treasure under the mountain. This will show how some of those characters came into that power. From Bilbo to Thorin, gollum, bard and the elf king have all come to some kind of power, some of it not necessarily bad. Bilbo Baggins is the main character of this book so the list will start with him. From the start Bilbo shows that he didn’t want to go on the adventure: “Poor bilbo couldn’t bear it any longer, at may never return he began to feel a shriek coming up inside, and very soon it burst out like the whistle of an engine coming out of a tunnel” (23). Gollum is a very interesting character when it comes to power and greed. To start, Gollum has an ancient ring of power and he knows that. Gollum found it one day and considered it his birthday present: “My birthday present that what we wants now we wants it” (75). Gollum has relied on that ring for as long as he has had it, always moving around the tunnels. When Bilbo happens to have the ring and Gollum doesn’t he is struggling to try and find it so that gollum could eat bilbo. Gollum becomes very upset that he does not have his magical ring: “Lost it is my precious lost lost, curse us and crush us my precious is lost” (76). Realizing that Bilbo has the ring gollum immediately tries to kill bilbo for his “birthday present”. Gollum is in a panic after Bilbo runs away from Gollum with the ring: “Yes bit if its got the present then goblinses will get it” (77). Gollum needed that ring to function. He had used it so much that he doesn’t know what to do without it. Gollum is the only character that got corrupted by a real power
