In this essay, I will be arguing why utopias are not enjoyable to those who live it, only to those who create it. There are many examples of utopias that are awesome for whomever created it, but horrendous for those who must survive there. The House of the Scorpion, “The Most Dangerous
Game”, and Adolf Hitler’s utopia were all great for the creator, but not the citizens who must get through the harsh conditions.
In The House of the Scorpion, El Patrón creates his own utopia in Opium. He has eejits that work for him, clones that are required to give him spare parts, and bodyguards that protect him. Do you think that the eejits, clones, and bodyguards enjoyed being El Patrón’s servants? This shows that El Patrón had a lot of power, but his personal qualities were not very good. The eejits had to pick weeds all day long, the clones had to die for El Patrón, and the bodyguards had to be around the greedy El Patrón all the time. This is one example in which the utopia is only nice for the creator.
In “The Most Dangerous Game”, General Zaroff creates a utopia on Ship-Trap Island. In the beginning, Zaroff hunted animals for fun. After killing every imagined animal, he decided to hunt humans. “There is no greater bore than perfection,” said General Zaroff. This explains why the
General was bored after he managed to hunt and kill every animal. After any ship was trapped by
Ship-Trap Island, Zaroff would then train the sailors how to hunt. Afterwards, the sailors would attempt to win a three-day game of hide-and-seek.
