Did you know that genetics play an important role in an individual’s health? According to our textbook Genetics is “the study of the general mechanisms of heredity and the variation of inherited traits.” So what exactly does that mean, you may be wondering? Humans are born with forty six chromosomes and within the nucleus we have gene’s that make us all different in our own ways. The genes that you inherit from your parents will determine your physical characteristics such as skin color, or if you carry a trait to a specific disease. Even though the genome project has made a positive impact on medical science, funding became a concern.

The Human Genome Project was started in 1990 by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Energy due to the strong interest to sequence the entire human genome. The human genome sequence for the Human Genome Project was expected to be complete by the year of 2005. The human genome project has concluded that there are probably about 20,500 human genes. It was mentioned that the human sequence can now identify their locations, which has opened the door detailed information about the structure, organization and function of the complete set of human genes to be accessed. This data has been perceived to be the basic set of inheritable "instructions" for the development and function of an individual. This project had a plan that consisted of the decision to map and sequence the genomes of other species. The project was very costly, so funding was a must in order for it to be a success. Contributions came from all over the world: France, Germany, United States and more. The anticipated date of completion was 2005, every scientist worked hard to meet that
