A Cautionary Tale About The Danger Of A Powerful Government: The hunger games is a Y/A book by Suzanne Collins about a dystopian society where they participate in a battle to the death. Both the book and movie serve as a cautionary tale of the dangers of granting too much power to a government. The story takes place within a dictatorial civilization where the government, known as the Capitol, holds total control over its citizens, including the ability to force children to participate in a brutal annual fight to the death known as the Hunger Games. Through the eyes of the novel's protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, the reader witnesses the devastating consequences of a government that prioritizes its own power and control over the well-being of its citizens.
Kitty Hart-Moxon, born December 1, 1926, is a Polish-English Holocaust Survivor. She was sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp in 1943 at the age of 16, where she survived two years with her mother, and was also imprisoned at other camps. This is her story. Kitty’s family went to the vicarage of Father Krasowski, where her father bribed some officials and obtained false documents for her and her mother.
When Katniss Everdeen the main character of the story is faced with the challenge of the Hunger Games she most overcome many challenges. One of which is the Setting. The setting takes place in a completely manipulatable arena. In this arena the controller can shoot fire ball, change the weather, drain rivers, poisoned berries and even create human like dogs. Katniss is challenged with all of this during her time in the arena.
The Hunger Games is a novel about a dystopian society controlled completely by the government. The people are separated into something called district’s. Each district has unique features. For example, district 4’s economy is based primarily on fishing and other such activities, while district 8’s economy is based on agriculture. There are a total of twelve districts, all completely controlled by the government.
The novel takes place in Panem, a nation made up of an upper-class metropolis known as the Capitol, as well as twelve servile districts that surround it. These districts are oppressed and exploited by the Capitol, which holds a lottery each year in order to choose “tributes” for a competition called the Hunger Games. Through this drawing, the Capitol selects a boy and a girl from each district and forces them to fight within a massive arena until there is only one tribute left alive. The Capitol claims that the event is both punishment for a rebellion from the districts and a memorial for those lost during the revolt, but presents it as an exciting spectacle that is televised all around Panem. The Capitol holds the Hunger Games in order to keep the districts in line, viewing those living in them as uncultured dangers to society who could rebel the moment they feel empowered.
Suzanne Collins incorporates and reinforces themes of a dystopian society throughout her novel, The Hunger Games. A dystopian society is an undesirable, oppressive and dehumanised society which is the central theme of the novel. This dystopian piece of literature explores social inequality and segregation within Panem, surveillance and monitoring exhibited by the Capitol and the annual Hunger Games. Readers observe the establishment of inequality between social classes and districts which is an integral part of a dystopian society. President Snow holds a tyrannical dictatorship which places the power in the people, the majority of whom makes the decisions. I think this clearly depicts what is going on throughout this book. It is a country named Panem which is portrayed as a post-apocalyptic America. A small amount of the people are rich politicians, military leaders or business people. The other large group of people are poor and live under the control of the government.
In the Hunger Games series, a dystopian future is set up. The government of Panem, The Capitol, holds the wealth of Panem giving it the power to control all districts. In order to enforce this theory, they created the Hunger Games. They suppressed the rights of the citizen’s of Panem and selected their children in order to fight each other do death for survival. These games were created to scare the people and show them who was in charge.
The Hunger Games (2008) is set in the future in a modern world analogy of USA but the country is given a fictional name of Panem. There were 13 districts in the country; each specializing in the extraction, production and manufacturing of different goods and raw materials like coal, for example, which were handed over to the Capitol resulting in the extreme poverty that the districts faced. District 13 rebelled against the power of The Capitol, the hub of power and technology, and met their doom. To prevent other districts from doing the same, the Capitol decided to hold a televised reality show-- the Hunger Games in which a boy and a girl from each district are selected as tributes to fight till death in the arena; the victor of the Hunger Games being rewarded with a house and food for a lifetime. As the districts face extreme poverty they participate in the games, which are a source of mere entertainment for the people of the Capitol.
The Hunger Games is a fairly popular and typical tale that includes a heroine, courage, and bravery. This story can be read or watched through many different lenses such as a Marxist lens, feminist lens, or even an archetypal lens. Through these lenses one can see as a reader or viewer that this is not just a story that fits into one category, but one that can fit into many. Using the Marxist and feminist lenses a viewer can gain a great depth of knowledge into The Hunger Games story itself.

Oppression is perhaps the most common and prevalent dystopian theme as it serves as a warning against a highly probable dark future through shedding light on the dark side of contemporary trends such as advanced technology and reality TV-shows .The Capitol 's oppression operates on two levels; districts and individuals. The districts in general and districts 11 and 12 in particular have suffered great injustices at the ruthless hands of the Capitol ; however, there is no greater injustice than The Hunger Games themselves not only are the people of Panem forced to surrender their children as tributes for the Capitol 's citizens viewing pleasure for a crime they had no hand in committing ,but they are also forced to watch helplessly as their children are killed in the most brutal of manners .In Catching Fire (2009) , President Snow decrees that " the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors" in order to get rid of Katniss once and for all ,and to further assert the Capitol 's dominance and quell any thoughts of rebellion(172).

On the other hand, there is Capitol who has political control in the nation of panem. The story starts when each district must offer a male and female between the ages of 12-18 at a public reaping as a penance for their uprising. The tributes which are male and female shall be delivered to the Capitol and then transferred to a public arena where they will fight with other district until a lone victor remains. This tradition called the hunger games. The story centers was coming from poor district 12 where Katniss and Peeta as their tributes.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a story about Katniss Everdeen who lives in district 12 with her mom and her sister Prim. Her sister gets picked for the Hunger Games which is where each of the 12 districts have to give a boy and a girl from the ages of 12-18 do fight till the death until there is one person standing. This is because there was an outbreak against the capitals thats why there is the Hunger Games. Katniss volunteers do her sister and now has to try and win the games. One theme in this story that is shown is that family love can go along way, this is shown because she is very overprotective of Prim.
