The Hunt For Upper Class In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald suggests that one's reality for true pleasure is threatened by chasing the thirst for richness and power through Gatsby, Myrtle and Tom in the pursuit for more wealth, love and, royalties. A topic that appeared throughout the great gatsby is that, chasing money and power may stall someone from true happiness. In support of this thesis you can see Gatsby chasing Daisy, as Nick and Gatsby are conversating about it not being a coincidence where Gatsby lives. “Gatsby bought that house so that daisy would be just across the bay” ( Page 78). He was hoping she was going to appear at one of his massive parties across the bay. Earlier in life Gatsby was onboard in Cody's yacht as his personal assistant. Traveling with Cody to the Barbary Coast and the West Indies. “He saw Dan Cody's yacht drop anchor over the most insidious flat on Lake Superior“ (Page 98). While traveling the seas with Cody, Gatsby fell in love with the goal of wealth and luxury. His ambitions were to do the same despite leading a life in poverty. After Gatsby finds Daisy he begins to fall in love all over again. He then goes on to tell daisy what he needs for them to workout. “He wanted nothing less of Daisy than that she should go to Tom and say: “I never loved you.” After she had obliterated four years with that sentence they could decide upon the more practical measures to be taken. One of them was that, after she was free, they were to go back to Louisville and be married from her house” (Page 109). Gatsby believes he desires love, and he may, but Daisy also represents the American Dream, and he craves the wealth and lifestyle that come with being with an individual like Daisy.
