We cannot live without social media nowadays. Social media such as Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat are becoming more popular these days and they surround us 24-7. No matter which age groups, kids, teenagers, adults or even elderly are also in touch with social media. Social media is influencing our lives, especially the interpersonal relationship. A coin has two sides. In my opinion, social media influence our interpersonal relationship in both good way and bad way.

First, social media helps develop people’s self identity and sense of self. Everyone can find a group of people that shares the similar interest or things that in common in the internet. For example, OUHK Secrets in Facebook provide a platform for students in the Open University of Hong Kong to share their thoughts and exchange information. A recent study reported that individuals share information with their friends and the general public to maintain a sense of connection, as well as build social capital (Erickson, 2011). By meeting and knowing a group of people that shares similar interests or background, people can recognize their self identity, sense of self, develop their potential and receive peer and social support. With a clearer self identity, people will develop a higher self esteem. Those groups of people from the internet can be defined as virtual communities which means social aggregations that emerge from the Net when enough people carry on those public discussions long enough, with sufficient
