During the Chicano Nationalist Movement, a well-known speaker, Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales, delivered a speech titled Chicano Nationalism: Victory for La Raza. In this speech, Rodolfo Gonzales tries to unify the Latin American people within the United States by using the idea of a family and to create a new political organization for the Chicano people. This speech was a cumulation of various ideas which stemmed from his own life, the experiences of the Chicano people, and the Chicano Nationalist Movement in general. Each of these factors contributed to the context of the speech and how the ideas within the speech are presented by Rodolfo Gonzales. Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales was born to Federico and Indalesia Gonzales, two Mexican immigrants, on June 18, 1928.
Being a Mexican American myself, I have always wondered what it was like for Hispanics in the 90’s. In the article “Hispanics and the American Dream,” Linda Chavez answers that exact question. She explains how Hispanics were, and still are, the largest minority group, and they were perceived as poor, uneducated, and the “dregs of society.” When in reality, that was not the case. Hispanics in the United States were succeeding in all different areas of life, they were well educated, had less infant mortalities than black and whites, and were making drastically more money than when they first migrated to the U.S.
Ruben Salazar was a man who 45 years ago became the matyr of the Chicano Moratorium anti-war protest. Salazar was born in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico in 1928 however he was raised in El Paso, Texas. At a young age he struggled with his identity, his mother frequently abased and denied her own nationality to her children. He attended public throughout his life and later went on to receive an education at the University of Texas in El Paso known as Texas Western College at that time. There he received his bachelor’s degree in journalism.
Applying for this position was a journey. I went from loving the idea to completely doubting myself capable of doing it. This process helped me understood the reasons why I want to serve my community and try to obtain the Director position. The Hispanic Latino Student Union (HLSU) has been the “family away from home” that it promised to be. But it also has been way more than that; HLSU has been moral support, leadership training, and network opportunities.
A leader is able to gain an audience’s attention because of their personality, morality, and how they hold themself. It is important for a leader to be organized, compassionate, able to compromise but also be firm on what they believe, and be a person who people look up to and aspire to be. I was part of an organization called National Charity League and this organization helped grow women’s confidence, public speaking skills, time management, and organizational skills. Each month, each class holds meetings to plan and discuss projects that follow the class’s focuses. This past year Class of 2023 philanthropic focus is children, cultural focus is international food, and for leadership we are focusing on self care and reflecting on the NCL experience.
Civic engagement will become incredibly important for the Latino population in America as we seek to enhance our political representation at the local, state, and federal levels. It is no secret that a Latino majority is coming to our great nation. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2014 there were more than 20 million children under 5 years old living in the U.S., and 50.2 percent of them were minorities, mostly Latino. Given these numbers, it is especially troubling that research indicates a low level of civic engagement for Latinos across the nation. Because the number of Latinos in the United States is relatively large and growing, the extent to which Latinos remain less engaged in civic life represents a serious gap in America’s public
Amidst my teaching experience and courses in higher education I have cultivated myself to become an advocate for students by fostering a student-centered approach and active learning in the classroom, as well as becoming an advocate for social justice. An effective leader is not only likeable and inspiring, but also gives their attention to the needs of others and is willing to listen to their concerns. I find this is also the case as I counsel students and parents about financial aid. I have the financial advising skills and business minded orientation that is important for the success of the college, but also recognize that our stakeholders are real people that need personal connections.
The values of compassion and accountability are only two of what I like to represent in my character. Leadership is also a big part of my identity, as I am a student representative for my school’s student council. If there’s anything that I’ve learned from being on student council, it’s that passion is the most important driving force in leadership. I joined the student council on a mission to proactively help build and make my school a better place, not just by being good in my own academics, but also leading by example for my fellow students. And like everything else, I don’t like to be insufficient in the work I do for the student council, such as creating school-wide spirit days for the students to enjoy after an entire grading period of work and hustle.
One of my biggest supporters are my parents. Their support and conviction about the worth of acquiring an education has shaped my beliefs, values and ambition to continue higher education and use my career in a progressive way to give back to my community. Unfortunately, not everyone had the same support system like I did. Many of my peers struggled whether to continue their education or financially support their family. This is a very dangerous reality within the Latino community that needs to be addressed and resolved immediately.
During the early morning of July 24, 1973, two white Dallas police officers responded to a gas station for a burglary call in Little Mexico, one of the officers thought he recognized one of the Rodriguez brothers or witnesses gave the boys’ description, there are various answers as to how the police came to suspect the two brothers of burglary. Darrell Cain and Roy Arnold, the two Dallas cops, went to the Rodriguez house and apprehended Santos and David Rodriguez, who were twelve and thirteen respectively, and took them back to the scene of the crime. The concept of the American Dream connects with each individual different, but most would agree that it is the ability to live the way you desire and the freedom to choose your own route. The American Dream is about the freedom to obtain whatever you wish if you are clever and work hard enough. The reason why people from different countries come to America is to escape an unfair class system, to search for better opportunities for their families, and to live in freedom and security provided by the police and military. The American Dream for jihad radicalists in The Looming Tower is to establish an Islamic state worldwide. On the other hand, the Latino community wants to work hard, provide for their family, and live in peace.
I am a proud Latina woman who was born and raised in Bolivia. I understand the importance of sharing our Latino culture with people that do not understand or belong to it. By sharing our cultural values and differences at the university, we can create a diverse environment of understanding and acceptance. As a Latina who is both in STEM and business major, I have encountered people who stereotype Latinos as people who merely work menial jobs and although many of our people operate in these field, that is something I don’t feel ashamed of. But, I also believe that we can stand out in many other professional fields that are not traditional for Hispanic people.
For this class, we were required to participate in doing a strategic plan for the School of Public Affairs (SOPA). Our job was to come up with a plan for (SOPA) that was in alignment with the larger St Cloud State University’s long term values and goals. This exercise accorded me an opportunity to see for myself the culture of SOPA and SCSU as it pertains to their long term vision, mission and objectives. Arguably, this was an insightful class because students in the class were given the mandate of facilitating all board meetings which were chaired by the dean of the School of Public Affairs (SOPA).
