Through my participation in Central Michigan University’s Pre-PT Club, I discovered seven crucial aspects of professionalism in physical provided by the APTA. The transition into a doctorate program relies on a higher form of professionalism. Clinical observations granted insight into a handful of situations where utilizing these traits is essential. Witnessing doctors recognizing their limits is eye-opening and shows how beneficial utilizing others in health care is. While in the hospital setting, I observed recovering alcoholic patients.
The Nurse of the Future (NOF) Core Competencies Models were choosing to achieve one optimal goal of providing quality of care to patients and their families. The NOF Nursing Core Competency provides a normal structured of approach to nursing and patient care, and they are all equally important in their unique ways. However, out of the 10 Nurse of the Future Core Competencies, I have chosen Healthcare professionalism and quality improvement which in my opinion are two main core outstanding competencies. Professionalism in any profession dictates the conduct, purpose, or qualities that define a profession.
Some ways that the medical assistant can demonstrate professionalism when supporting patients who might be uncomfortable with having their skin examined by asking for their permission before touching them. It is very important for the patient to be comfortable with the medical assistant enough so they can see what is going on. Another way to demonstrate professionalism when dealing with patients that are uncomfortable with having their skin examined is by letting the patient know that you are not there to judge them. Explaining to the patient that you are only there to help find out the problem is vital because as an MA, you have to be able to see if there is any necrosis, redness, or dryness of the skin. The facilities enforcing protocols and policies to secure that employees are meeting government regulations. Doctors, nursing staff and support staff I must use their best ethical and moral judge in most case to ensure patients are being retreated. As a medical assistant I would ensure that the patient understands that this is a judgement free zone. I would also remind the patient that we are professionals and there to help them. As an aspiring physician in Emergency Medicine, it is hard to describe typical physician workday activities. Every day is unique and filled with many opportunities to learn and develop clinical, interpersonal communication, leadership and critical thinking skills. Despite this, there are certain routine activities which I had the opportunity to observe through my shadowing experience in the Emergency and Operating rooms at California Hospital Medical Center, Los Angeles. One day, a two year old patient came into the ER after falling and cutting her head. The patient’s mother told the physician that her daughter is nervous and scared.
Finally, it will explain the importance of ethics in communication and how patient safety is influenced by good or bad team communication. The first method of communication is mutual respect. The patient and clinician have a partnership based on trust. The patient has respect for the clinician 's experience and the clinician has respect for the patient 's wishes, needs, concerns and builds on past experience to meet immediate needs. (Paget, 2011).
Showing professionalism in your choice of field or any field is more than showing up on time or dressing the part. Webster dictionary defines professionalism as “conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person.” As a nurse, professionalism is a vital quality that is required to present at any workplace. To me, professionalism means having to demonstrate a professional, respectful attitude to your surroundings such as fellow coworkers, patients, and facility that you are in. It means dressing appropriately according to your profession and arriving in a timely manner before your shift begins; as well as leaving after your shift has ended, not early.

Although there are many qualities that one could possess that are equally important in displaying professionalism, there are two qualities that I believe a student must have in order to display professionalism, those two qualities are accountability and altruism. One major component that I believe a student should possess to exude professionalism is accountability. Accountability is being able to assume responsibility for any and all actions. Acknowledging personal accountability and accepting all consequences for their actions is a great way for a student in a doctor of physical therapy programs to display professionalism.
Interpersonal skills and effective communication among healthcare professionals are at the core of quality patient care. Interpersonal skills are defined by Rungapadiachy (1999, p.193) as “those skills which one needs in order to communicate effectively with another person or a group of people”. It includes verbal communication, non-verbal communication, listening skills, negotiation, problem-solving, decision-making, and assertiveness (Skills You Need, n.d.). The National Joint Committee for the Communicative Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities (1991) defined communication as, “Any act by which one person gives to or receives from another person, information about that person 's needs, desires, perceptions, knowledge, or affective states.
