In a recent article by Andrew Warner titled “5 Reasons to Consider Community College” Warner addresses the topic of why community college might be better and states reasons. One main point from the article is 30% of U.S. undergraduates are enrolled at public, two-year colleges. They also offer benefits like open-enrollment policies and flexible scheduling Warner. Warner gives a pretty good statistic that nearly half of the U.S undergrads are attending a public two year college.
In this chapter Dweck spends a lot of time on the topic of the two mindsets, fixed and growth. She analyzes each and explains why and how they are different. Also, she writes why it’s better to have a “growth mindset” opposed to the “fixed
There are many differences for me between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. First, I think having a growth mindset means that you are willing put in the time and dedication to do something. Then having a fixed mindset to me means that if something is challenging you give up and quit. In addition, having a growth mindset means you want to learn new things even if you know they are challenging. At my job this affects me a ton.
Growth or Fixed Mindset In Carol Dweck’s article “The Perils of Praise and Promise” she explains the difference between a growth and fixed mind-set. Dweck says” In a fixed mind-set, students care first and foremost about how they will be judged; smart or not smart. Repeatedly students with this mind-set reject opportunities to learn if they might make mistakes.
This growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts” (p.76). This is basically describing how people with growth mindsets will look at at what skill/ talent they have in the beginning (whether great or small) is not their limitation but what they grow from to get to where they could go. One example of this was my personal experience in my very first hip hop class when I was 11. Being the youngest and most inexperienced, it was easy to be intimidated. Not being used to this type of movement and groove, I learned the steps but kept looking down, biting my lip and overall not focusing on every part of movement so if an arm was extended out completely while doing footwork, I focused on perfecting the footwork too much and had a bent arm.
The Mindset “Although people may differ in every which way- in their initial talents and aptitudes, interests, or temperaments- everyone can change and grow through application and experience.” Does the people that an individual is surrounded by have an impact on someone developing a growth mindset? For years people have been wondering why people think and act differently from each other. In the article “The Mindsets,” Carol Dweck talks about two different types of mindsets that she has studied for thirty years.
Attending a community college was not always my number one choice for my college life after high school. I had always dreamed of attending a university once I graduated high school. Delta State was always high on my list of schools to attend, especially now that I have matured and experienced the first two years of my college journey. Attending community college was the fiscally responsible move for me after high school graduation. The two years I have spent at Itawamba Community College has given me the experience to take the next step towards my career goals; attending and graduating from a university.
There are two known mindsets, a fixed mindset, and a growth mindset. The two may sound similar, but they are quite different. A growth mindset is a good mindset; it allows you to believe in yourself, it lets you try new things, and it helps you never give up. On the other hand there is the fixed mindset; this mindset is one that everyone has on some part or aspect of their life. A fixed mindset, as it sounds, makes your thoughts stay fixed about something; for example if someone is not good at math they might say that they are not a math person.
When I graduated from high school college did not cross my mind. I wanted to join the Marine Corps and serve my country for as long as I could because both my grandfather and uncle we’re both in the Navy. But since complications happened I ended up in Massasoit. I chose Massasoit because it has one of the best transferring programs and has the major I wanted to get into which is Early Childhood Education. When I applied for Massasoit I did not know much about community college, I just thought that it’ll be similar to highschool which is not at all
Twelve percent of high school graduates are unable to attend college due to their own personal reasons(Rath). Even if the do want to go to college they cannot because they can’t afford to do so, so instead they try to take on low paying jobs. By making community college free not only does it help reduce student loans, it can greatly improve the unemployment rate, improve education. Not only that but it also can bring people out of poverty and even give rise to an educated workforce(Rehm).
I chose to attend community college in the United State because of two reasons. First, I am an international student. My purpose is not only school but also new cultural. I do not want I become a person who have high knowledge but without any experiments. I think, “If I choose community college to begin my study in the United State, I will have more time to learn about the habits and customs of the US” and I am happy because I did that decision.
Education and creativity is one of my big factors of growth. Its very important to me to have an education because that’s how you have knowledge, without knowledge no one can have an education to give a point of view in life. ”Without growth and self success, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning. This quote explains, that education affect lives, whether it’s physically or mentally. The goals in my 8th grade year are graduating the year with high honor roll, making my family/peers proud, and setting a good example to others.
Finally, an example of an intellectually fixed mindset would be if Cecil found a puzzle so completely frustrating, that he gave up and never returned to the puzzle. The growth mindset believes that their potential intelligence comes from learning, while the fixed mindset thinks they only have a certain amount of intelligence. Along with their differences in learning, these students also have a difference in school priorities. The students with the fixed mindset only cared how smart they would appear and turned down opportunities that were critical to their success. Students with the growth mindset thought about their efforts, and when they work harder it will show in their abilities and accomplishments. I agree with this because everyone will react differently to a setback, especially if they already react differently to education.
