The importance of energy as an essential ingredient in economic growth as well as in any strategy for improving the quality of human life is well established. Energy consumption in the residential sector is usually because of cooking, lighting, water heating, space heating and electric appliances. The energy use in the residential sector is an important area for campaigns to conserve energy. Energy saving in the home creates benefits for the household in the form of lower energy bills and for the community at large in the form of lower imports. Households constitute an important target group as they are major contributors to the emission of greenhouse gases and consequently, to global warming. For residential buildings, the physical size of a structure is one key indicator of the amount of energy used by its occupants, although income level and a number of other factors, such as weather, also can affect the amount of energy consumed per household. In addition, occupants of larger homes tend to be more affluent, and as a result they tend to own more energy-using appliances, including multiple television sets and computers and a wide array of other electronic devices (such as digital video recorders and set-top boxes) whose operation consumes considerable amounts of electric power.
