In his book, Democracy in America, Alexis de Tocqueville states that there “exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.”1 However, equality does not exist in the material world because it is a supernatural ideology. Attempting to achieve it would be futile, as it cannot be gained in this life. Instead of equality, recognition of the dignity of all people and justice toward all is sought. Since equality is impossible to gain on this earth, Americans prefer liberty. This paper will prove that Alexis de Tocqueville 's assertion is false. According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, equality is “the state of being equal, esp. in status, rights, and opportunities.”2 However, equality is unnatural and cannot exist. Such an ideology does not exist in nature among animals or plants and is not a part of the natural realm. For example, among animals, some live and some die; some are fast and some are slow; some are carnivorous and others are herbivorous. Such characteristics do not follow the idea of equality, for if there was equality among animals, all would be herbivores and there would be no hunter or prey. Among plants, some are large, while others are small; some are green and some are many colors. If there is not equality among nature, how could there be equality among humans?
