A major theme of this novel that shows its truth is the desire for friendship to solve one’s problems. Friendship is powerful. It can combat loneliness and longing and combat alienation. However, friendship was the pitfall of George and Lennie. The relationship between the two men was unique- it was uncommon for a man to travel with another (Steinbeck 35). In the novel, Slim wonder if it is is due to “everybody in the whole d*mn world” being afraid of each other (35). There is an “authentic dignity” in George and Lennie’s relationship, but their vulnerability with one another and the trust they place in the other leeds to them depending on and feeling responsible for each other (Bloom).
