The Book Thief is the emotional story of a young girl living in Nazi, Germany during the Holocaust. I chose this book to learn more about how Jews were treated in Germany during World War II, during the rule of Adolph Hitler. And, to also learn about living in Nazi, Germany during the Holocaust. The Book Thief can be a love, war, and identity book.
The theme of this book is the importance of friendship. In The Book Thief, Erik Vandenburg, a Jewish man saved Han’s life during World War I, giving up his own life in process. After the war, Han’s visited Erik’s widow and young son Max. Now Max is 22 and is hiding from the Nazi’s. Han’s is his last hope for survival.
