Holcomb, Kansas can be described as a boring and isolated town, according to Truman Capote. Well, with a name like Holcomb your expectations for the village needs to be low. North Dakota is the most rural of all the states, with farms covering more than 90% of the land. It’s known for its rich oil from fosses that were left behind after Lake Agassiz dried up. In the book North Dakota History by Neil Howe, he explains how during the last Ice Age, northern North America was covered by a glacier, which alternately advanced and deteriorated with variations in the climate. Before the Ice Age, North Dakota had a sub-tropical climate much like Florida is today. This continental ice sheet covered much of central North America between 30,000 and 10,000 years ago (Howe 33).
The Story of Charles Jackson Charles Jackson was part of one of the only black families in the small town of Stillwater, Oklahoma. Charles was a big fan of baseball as a kid. He grew up watching Babe Ruth and the 1936 Yankees win back to back to back to back World Series. There was always some sort of problem between his father and the whites, but he always told Charles that it was nothing and that he should never listen to what they say.
Sweet Land of Liberty: The Forgotten Struggle for Civil Rights in the North by Thomas J. Sugrue is a comprehensive description of the civil rights movement in the North. A BRIEF HISTORY OF ROMANCE, ARKANSAS During the fall of 1850, a six-wagon, wagon train from Kentucky came upon a little valley with a good size creek. Their leader, Ben Pruitt, thought it looked like a good place to camp for the winter, and they did. By the time spring arrived they had named their settlement Kentucky Valley and called the creek, Cliffy Creek because of the cliffs in the creek and along its sides. One of those cliffs creates a rather large waterfall just a few hundred yards from the downtown area.
Hill Folks: A History of Arkansas Ozarker’s and Their image by Brooks Blevins, a book that’s title aptly describes what this book is about. It is trying to show more of a realistic view of the people and culture of the Ozarks in Arkansas. With the majority of information seemingly coming straight out census reports. Though these reports may not have been as accurate as they could have been census reports would not have been biased by popular views of the outside world. He is trying to refute the image that Ozarker’s are all backward hill folk that do little other than wrestle pigs and make moonshine.
Dred Scott, slave of army surgeon John Emerson, had travelled with Emerson from Missouri to several states including Minnesota. The Missouri Compromise declared Minnesota a free state. After returning to Missouri, Scot sued for his freedom based on the grounds that he had previously lived in a free state. When the case reached the supreme court, the court ruled that living in a free state for a period of time did not make Scott a free man, that the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional because Congress did not have the right to prohibit slavery in any territory as that violated the 5th amendment, and finally that as a black man, Scott was excluded from citizenship and could not bring suit Abraham Lincoln was Republican candidate in the
The Missouri Compromise was definite attempt by the government to shove the issue out of view. By the time the Missouri Compromise was introduced, a few northern states were already in the process of abolishing slavery, as was England. The government was finally recognizing the cruelties of slavery but did not want to anger the southern plantation owners. Thus, they created the Missouri Compromise in order to ease their guilt and face the least contempt. The Missouri Compromise was only able to increase the brewing conflict of slavery between northern states and southern states.
The United States was a turbulent and politically divided place in 1850’s and leading up the Civil War. The Kansas Territory exemplified the treacherous nature of the U.S. experiencing all the issues that Congress tried to ignore in order to hold together the Union. Nicole Etcheson details the events in her book Bleeding Kansas: Contested Liberty in the Civil War Era. Most people used the name Bleeding Kansas to describe the violent atmosphere of the territory. The violence stemmed from Stephen A. Douglas’s idea of popular sovereignty that is allowing the people to vote on the admission of slavery into the state’s constitution.
America’s founders created the constitution in order to create unification and order in the United States. However, there have been controversy surrounding the interpretation of the constitution, this has caused debate over many issues within the country. These issues and the lack of wartime policy within the constitution directly lead to the Civil War, which was one of the worst alterations this nation has faced. The Missouri compromise, the Dred Scott decision, and Bleeding Kansas were controversial issues surrounding the constitution that directly lead to the Civil War.

On February 18, 2016, my daughter and I saw National Mythstory (Abstract) by Bryan Anthony Moore in the upstairs gallery of the BSU Student Union Building. Moore is expressing his distain towards Texas and the fallacies within their textbooks, specifically the 2014 edition. His mixed medium use of ceramic sculptures, various graphite work on a selection of paper such as tea stained and burned and aged, and an oil painting made the exhibit very interesting and unique for me. He even used something called ‘bullshit ink’, an ink concoction created from bull feces to represent “the bullshit passing for History in Texas public schools”. (citation)
When we think of the American West, we always envision a land of rugged mountains and vast prairie, on which cowboys ride on horseback and chase after the Indians. This is the definition of the American West as presented on big screens in cinema, where most Americans’ perception of the myth of the American West comes from. Myth is a story that represents a culture's values and helps to define the individuals that comprise it. All cultures are based on myths.
