TOK Essay: “The possession of knowledge carries an ethical responsibility. Evaluate this claim” The spread of knowledge and information is extremely vital in our society today. Knowledge enables us to share information with others in our community or keep it to ourselves. Knowledge can provide us with a gateway to understanding the complexity of the world today such as the socioeconomic, political, health and environmental issues. Whether it is discovering a cure for dementia or building the fastest airplane, knowledge is required. Ethical considerations must be considered when dispersing knowledge to the public, as this can affect one’s life either negatively or positively. Throughout history, we have seen the great effects of dispersing knowledge. From pioneers like Stephen Hawking who provided us with theories that allowed us to understand space to a much greater degree to Thomas Edison who invented the light bulb. Without the act of innovating and sharing crucial information, the life we know now would be very different. It is important to understand what knowledge exactly means. A teacher has the responsibility of allowing students to learn information; additionally, we rely on the older generation to provide knowledge in an ethical manner. Teachers must ensure that the youth are given the appropriate knowledge in order for them to succeed in the future. For example, we rely on our English teachers to provide us with language and grammar skills in order for us to be able to apply the skills learned. If given the wrong skills, students become at risk of not being able to pass their exams. This essentially affects whether the youth are able to teach the future
