What comes to mind when you hear the word prostitution? The basic definition of prostitution is the act of selling ones body for any type of sexual intercourse in exchange of money. In today's society people often think of it as a tawdry business. They even think of these women as diseased and lacking morality. My question is why do we think this way? Prostitution is one of the oldest business in the world it dates back to at least 2400 BC (Winter, 1986). Not only is it the oldest but it is also the most profitable business in the world. According to a website called elitedaily.com In 2005 and 2011 the average weekly cash income for pimps in the city was $32,833 (Elite Daily, 2018). So why should it be still be illegal? There are many positive …show more content…
The debt in the U.S. is very high as of right now, according to the us debt website we are $21 trillon dollars in debt as of today. The goverment has spent lots of tax money to raze prostitution but obviously none of it has worked or even helped in the slightest. If we legalized this it could help the economy because we could start taxing that 32,000 that I mentioned earlier made by the pimps weekly instead of losing money from trying to demolish this profession. Lets take a look at Greece for a second, Greece was in very bad economic crisis and as soon as they legalized this, they were able to get out of debt and pay back the other countries. Also, the demand for this profession is very high and it will never change, so no matter how high the price goes up the demand will always remain the same. A website called Procon.org, someone said we shouldn't legalize it and he would rather "let our country drown in poverty than make this profession legal and we're only doing it to satisfy our own bellies." Yes, we maybe doing it for our own pleasure but we also do lots of other things to "satisfy our own bellies. " We have a bunch of goods that satisfy our wants but is not necessarily a need for example, we have tobacco, alcohol, piercings, and tattoos. What's the difference between going to a bar and getting a drink than going to placate a sexual need with a prostitute? I believe …show more content…
What is human trafficking? Human trafficking is the most profitable crime in the world right next to drug trafficking. Human trafficking is when girls and boys are kidnapped and sold for sex slavery. They are forced into committing sexual acts with people in exchange for usually drugs or money. This sounds a lot similar to prostitution but I promise it is not. Prostitution is between two consenting adults over the age 18 meanwhile human trafficking is forced and usually are minors that legally can not consent. According to the U.S department about 600,000 to 800,000 people are trafficked across the international borders every year. The reason why I feel this is so important to reduce the number is because the common age for a sex slaves are 14-18. Obviously, we are all in this age range. This literally hits very close to home, Saint Louis, Missouri was voted number 20 hotspot for human trafficking. Since 2007, more than 1,500 calls have been made from Missouri to the Human Trafficking Hotline. The reason why these people who get trafficked don't come forward is because they are afraid. They are not only afraid of their kidnapper but they are also afraid of seeking out to the police. They are afraid of the police because it is not uncommon for the innocent slaves to get arrested, they get arrested because the police do not recognize the
