The Importance Of Modality In The English Language

Learners nowadays are under constant pressure to meet the increased demand for a better writing communication. One of the English language components is Modals and their importance is driven from the fact that they form infinitives and change the meanings of sentences to express advice, permission, requests and ability. ‘Modality’ is one of the ‘golden oldies’ among the basic notions in the semantic of language. But, in spite of this, it also remains one of the most problematic and controversial notions: there is no consensus on how to define and characterise it, let alone on how to apply definitions in the empirical analysis of data. (Nuyts 2005: 5). I am taking advantage of my active participation in the Delta program to further investigate Modality as it represents a challenge to my students, in Kuwait where I am teaching, and my current students in the course; both groups of students suffer lack the understanding and the ability to use modality in a proper manner.
II. Analysis

Modals meaning:

Modality is a linguistic category referring to the factual status of a proposition. A proposition is modalized if it is marked for being undetermined with respect to its factual status. (Narrog 2012: 6). During my research to build this document, I have encountered many studies approaching Modals from different point of views, yet they have all agreed to the meaning that modality basically covers the basic modal meanings of obligation, necessity, possibility or probability.
