Working in Law Enforcement as an Introvert In today’s society, many people think it is ideal for a police officer to be an extrovert; If someone is an extrovert and is involved in the police force it is acceptable but if you are an Introvert like me I feel that it is looked down upon which isn’t fair at all. I read an article that was written by a man named Peter Moskos, he is a former Baltimore Police Department officer, Peter Moskos is also an introvert and was successful when he was involved in Law Enforcement so for people to say that working as a police officer is not a good choice for an Introvert clearly doesn’t understand that it is normal and has been done many times. A good officer is always on the lookout for the unusual” (Balch 106). I myself being an Introvert and wanting to have a career In Law Enforcement I’m always aware of my surroundings; I also tend to over analyze things around me all the time. I do think that this is true for all introverts as well, so when society says that the ideal police officer would be an extrovert I do not think that is a true statement. “Police Officers respect authority and know how to take orders. They like to give orders too, and demands respect from juveniles, criminals, and minorities.” (Balch,107) Being an introvert you are able to take orders and respect authority because you don’t like to leave a bad impression and most importantly you don’t want to disappoint those who you look up to and respect. Extroverts on the other hand don’t like the idea of listening to others because they feel as though they know mostly everything and don’t want to be told anything else, they also like to do things on their own, which isn’t a good trait in law enforcement because it is all about team work and looking out for other officers as well. You cannot always think you are right because you will never learn
