History of the term “Majors” and the Mascot The sideline mascot was created by the Spirit Committee of the SBA in the spring of 1985 when they began requesting mascot uniform designs. It first appeared on the field in the fall of 1985. There are two articles in the Purple and White documenting this. See Mar. 26, 1985, page 6 Here and Sept. 10, 1985 page 1 and 5. Prior to this time, the only visual representation of the athletic teams for Millsaps were the words “Majors,” which first appeared in the early 1900’s, the military “leaf,” which is the insignia for a major in the military, was used on jerseys and helmets, and the graphic seal of the college with the encircled line drawing of the college founder Major Millsaps’ head and shoulders.
In our first year as a new team, we will have two mascots, King Clark and Queen Shea. In our first four years as an organization, we will release a new mascot every year. This will hopefully create excitement amongst the fans, to see who the new mascot will

The Rogerian Method was created to mediate the two opposing sides of an argument into an agreeable solution. Jane Willy used the method to settle the dispute over the usage of American Indian tribes as mascots. Although she makes a solid resolution, Willy fails to correctly write all parts of the Rogerian Method which are essential to keep the pacifist approach that comes with this method. The opposition to Jane insists that using American Indians as mascots is slanderous to their people. Jane Willy thinks that it is okay to use American Indians as mascots, so long as it is with good intentions.
When people talk about mascots being named after Indian cultures they think that the Indians being recognized should feel honored. However, when that team plays their rival the other fans are taught to hate those people causing them to hear hateful and degrading comments throughout their lives. “If it’s the team’s tradition, then it’s a legacy of bigotry.” (Wulf). People don’t show respect for Native Americans they use them to create a profit.

The Mascot Hall of Fame is a hall of fame for the United States mascots. To get into the Mascot Hall of Fame you have to have an impact on the sport and community, have groundbreaking performances, and is memorable and unique. It’s important that Willie the Wildcat should be nominated for Mascot Hall of Fame because they want to remember the mascots and their great effects on the community.
This College is the University of Michigan State who crushed the Cougs in the Holiday Bowl. This team’s mascot is Sparty the Spartan. Their athletic program is very successful. Their basketball teams football team and soccer teams are highly ranked nationally. Their school colors are Black Green and White.

The main sports teams being targeted due to controversial mascots are programs having names that deal with Native Americans. Well known programs, such as, the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and the Washington Redskins are just a few of the many teams being targeted due to controversial team names and/or mascots. Currently, the Redskins are receiving the most heat from racial groups. However, professional sport teams are not the only teams receiving negative remarks; there are well known colleges that are also receiving huge blows for racial symbols.
