One piece of the lottery that kept the most tradition was the black box. The author writes “ the original paraphernalia for the lottery had been put into use even before Old Man Warner, the oldest man in town, was born. Mr. Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new box. But no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by the black box”. This box had been around for so long and represented years of tradition that no one wanted to get a new box.
When the lottery was conducted by Mr. Summers, the writer began to reveal that something is askew, as the crowd got more anxious. As narrated in the story “most of them were quiet. Wetting their lips. Not looking around”. This shows that the villagers were nervous when the lottery began.
When the twelve year old Nancy “[goes] forward switching her skirt, [taking] a slip daintily from the box,” the audience is struck by her innocence, making the subsequent death of her mother via the lottery outcome even more terrible and tragic. A still more effective example of Jackson’s appeals to pathos occurs at the end of the story, where “someone [gives] little Davy Hutchinson a few pebbles” to join the crowd in stoning his mother. This moment is incredibly poignant and elevates the disgust and pity that the audience feels as the nature of the lottery is revealed. Little Davy is too young understand what is happening, and it is reasonable to assume that the rest of the characters have long since lost touch with the purpose of the lottery, as the only explanation the audience is given for its continuation is Warner’s statement that “there’s always been a lottery.” This remarkably insufficient excuse in support of such a heinous crime secures the sympathy of the audience towards not only Tessie’s plight but also Jackson’s argument.

In this short story, after the Hutchinson family gets drawn, Tessie Hutchinson is declared “winner” of the lottery.

The entire town follows his lead, blindly ignorant to the murder they are committing each year. The lottery, and the people in the town who go along with it, harms not only the victim but the children of the victim. The children will now have no mother and will have memories of when they essentially murdered their own mother. Blind ignorance has a huge effect on young people “The children had stones already, and someone gave little Davy Hutchinson a few pebbles.” Davy is the victim’s youngest son who, when they went through the second part of the lottery, was not even old enough to hold his own ballot.

There were many details that seemed harmless in the story “The Lottery” that invoked foreshadowing leading up to the vicious ending. Children were making piles of rocks in the center of town and filling their pockets insuring to pick the ones that were smooth and rounded. My first conclusion was to maybe skip rocks as many children did and still do today since they were out for school, only to be flabbergasted as to learn the true purpose in the end. As the lottery was about to begin Mrs. Hutchinson came running into the square to join her family and the town making more obvious as Mr. Summers makes a point to state, “Thought we were going to have to get on without you, Tessie.”
In The Lottery, the characters of the story follow traditional ideas, however they do not inquire about these ideas that are not moral at all. Initially, the people of a small village have a lottery that occurs each year in which the winner ironically doesn’t win money, but wins a ticket to death. The villagers show no sign of excitement, but they are rather demonstrating that an event such as this one is not fun at all. In addition to that, the box is a major symbol in the story. The box is very shabby, demonstrating that they don’t take care of it or fix it.
The tradition of the lottery has been carried out for so long in this village that nobody even knows the reason for its occurring in the first place and nobody questions it. When Old Man Warner, the oldest man in the village, is told about other villages giving up the tradition of the lottery, he says that they are, “[A] pack of crazy fools [...]. There [has] always been a lottery [...]” (Jackson, 4). There is no reason why there has always been a lottery except that every year on June 27th, they held the lottery.

They do not want to follow the other towns that had given up the lottery. The townspeople are apprehensive of transition because of the unknown factors. One of the examples in the story that shows their lack of willingness to change their customs is the battered black box they use for the lottery. It has been stained and the original color of the wood is shown on the side. Every year, Mr. Summers, who manages the lottery suggests to the villagers to get a new box.
The characters’ behaviors don’t exactly scream “I love the lottery!” The most logical reason for doing something that makes them unhappy is they are doing it as a tradition. But why not break the tradition? After digging a little deeper, it is easy to see that the lottery has been going on for a long time: “There was a story that the present box had been made with some pieces of the box that had preceded it, the one that had been constructed when the first people settled down to make a village here (p. 16, lines 78-82).” Since the original black box was made when the village first settled, the lottery is an ancient tradition that is generations old.
“The Lottery’s” opening lines read: “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. ”(Jackson 309). From this line, one can conclude that Jackson is trying to portray the village as a quaint and nice place where townsfolk gather, and no harm occurs. However, this strays far from the truth. As the story continues, the gathering abruptly changes and ultimately leads the townspeople to commit violence and murder.
“Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example, selecting the smoothest and the roundest stones”(304).The ritual and traditions of the lottery in Shirley Jackson’s story seem to be just as old as the town itself, especially since most of the residents do not recall any of the old rituals, even the Old Man Warner, who is “celebrating" his 77th lottery.
