The Influences of Christianity
Although it is not spoken about in The Myth of Sisyphus, Christianity is nevertheless an important part of the Absurd. Human society has for the most part taken their faith for granted, and specifically Christianity in the case of Europe. But ‘The Enlightenment’ changed this, scientific advancement and reason came to the forefront and cast doubts into people’s minds about the church. The importance of this change is something Camus identifies. The very problems that Christianity answers such as how should I act? What is my purpose? Are also what occupies Camus , yet he rejects the answers offered by Christianity.
He liked to think of himself as instinctively pagan…in love with the tangible pleasures of earth.
