The teaching profession, while often undervalued, plays a critical role in the development of upcoming generations. Children from five years old to their upper teens spend upwards of 7 hours a day for over half the calendar year in a school system with only their teachers as a primary guiding force outside of their homes. Teachers not only cultivate minds in educating their subjects, but they also help to mold their students’ lives by leading by example and showing how to properly interact in everyday life. The Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) standards were enacted to ensure that incoming teachers possess the knowledge and skills required to provide quality instruction to their students. This standard includes the ability to plan and design instruction, use proper teaching strategies and resources for all students, and create a positive learning environment. Being able to effectively design lessons and follow through on delivery can be the difference in whether concepts are grasped by the classroom. This significantly impacts student learning outcomes and requires the teacher to be skilled in differentiating instruction to meet the needs of each of their students. Without having the ability to properly design and deliver instruction, a teacher will be significantly hindered in their ability to educate all the students in their room and will be unable to properly perform the main function of their job, which is to educate. An educator can follow all the other INTASC standards, be professional and know their content area, but if they cannot properly plan and give instruction to their students, they will essentially be coming into the classroom each day with one hand tied behind their back.
