History of Education in Arkansas
Today, education is a state and local responsibility in the United States. Our founding fathers believed that in order to keep a democratic system of government, priority must be given to the education of US citizens. The improvement of education has been a state goal throughout history for many Arkansans. Whether in rural or populated areas, our state believes that all students deserve an education to better not only their future, but the future of this state. Education in Arkansas can be traced back to students meeting wherever they could. Most of the time this was a small one room schoolhouse. Arkansas education has developed to now over 1,056 public schools with more than 460,000 students enrolled (Arkansas Department of Education, n.d.). The overall goal is for all students to be taken care of while in the classroom and to gain the knowledge that they need in order to be successful in life. My goal is to become a teacher and I will continue to work for the goal that my ancestors created many years ago. Every student deserves to be able to walk out of the classroom having learned how to become a responsible citizen that can change the world. In early Arkansas education, teachers taught in small one-room schoolhouses, instructed many age groups of kids, worked in unideal conditions, and taught all of the basics in the “Three R’s”. All of these challenges were to make sure that their students had an education. Today in Arkansas, we are blessed to have better schools, educators, and resources in order to teach our future.
