There are movies out there that try to hone in on a certain type of comedy. The producers seek to entertain the viewers through sporadic bursts of randomness and hijinks. These movies are said to be “so bad that they are good”, and there are movies that do well with this type of formatting for their stories. However, there are movies such as The Jerk (1979) from director Carl Reiner, which completely miss the mark when they try to create these kinds of stories. It fails on the aspects that make up a good, quick-witted movie such as creating an easy to follow storyline, correctly timing moments to place jokes, and the comical output of the jokes themselves. Throughout the film, the storyline is very difficult to follow. Most of the films of this genre do a good job in putting their jokes in a way that flows with the storyline and adds an aspect of hilarity to the scene. There were times where a joke was properly placed in, but for the most part the jokes were very random and unnecessary to the story. One such instance from the film, was when the main character, Navin was shot at while at work. In this scene there is a very weak link between what is happening in the story and the joke they are trying to throw in which decreases the value of the joke. This joke like others in the story would have been great, had they been setup in a way that would maximize their comical value. Along with that, this movie seemed to be trying to insert as many jokes as possible into the smallest time frame without any sort of time in between to help move the story forward.
