Most often, professors find an interest in the daily life of a college student, especially freshmen starting a new experience all over again. What is it like for them in college, and how does it compare to the modern college experience for the freshmen of today? A discussion on the third chapter of Rebekah Nathan’s My Freshman Year, “Community and Diversity” and how those two entities, or lack thereof can affect a student’s enthusiasm towards learning, doing homework, and immersing themselves in their own college experience. In the book, Nathan, a college professor, immerses herself into college life and makes an attempt to relive her college experience in the current time to find answers on why her students are not as animated about learning
She introduces three students Aesha, Johnny, and Asad whom are homeless college students and explains their stories. All the stories have the same point is that they left school because of hardships living place to place, worrying about their physical health and doing their school work. She states "Without housing, access to a workspace, or access to a shower, students' lives suffer, their grades suffer, and they are more likely to drop classes, if not withdraw entirely from school"( Bader 714). She points out that low-income and homeless students have to face many problems that cause it difficult for them to get through college. Christina Funk, junior, established a new organization that will benefit incoming freshman and returning students in their academics, student involvement, and social life. Funk’s organization, Students4Students was created in the beginning of August and has already over 50 official members in this organization. Students4Students consist of mentors known as Wolves and mentees known was Pups. Mentors must have attended University of West Georgia for a least a year and obtain a 2.7 GPA or higher. Most mentees are freshman who would like guidance during their first year of college.
Jackie Robinson stated one of my favorite quotes, "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives. " For two semesters, I have participated in the Community College Completion Corps. I have served as both Sub-Chair planner and Vice President of membership; in the former position I led the campaign. This event educates Tarrant County College Southeast Campus students as wells as faculty members about the importance of graduating from community college.

A challenging academic schedule throughout high school, she has consistently raised her standards and expectations for herself. She focuses on improving herself in all areas of her life, but is definitely not self-centered. Always there with a smile and a helping hand she has gained the respect and admiration of both peers and staff. True to herself, Katrina has strong values and morals, and is not easily influenced by peer pressures. She is a young woman any teacher would want as a student, any person would want as a friend, and any parent would be proud to call their daughter.

Students have five fraternities and sororities to choose from depending on their interests. By living on campus, I’ve been able to learn about and appreciate various cultures and their practices, permitting new relationships to grow and prosper. Because of this, I want to be the one who facilitates healthy relationships among residents. Through these relationships, a positive and comfortable atmosphere would be created. I believe that personal and academic success is directly related to a good home-base, so I want to be able to create such a place for residents.
Warrensburg Missouri, being a college town, is full of many opportunities such as joining Greek life, getting internships, and most impotently getting a college degree. Being the first to attend college in my family, I have been self-motivated to attend class’s everyday on a daily bases and even build time into my schedule to study for quizzes and exams. For the past four months, I have been attending the University of Central Missouri (UCM) in Warrensburg. Therefore, I have learned the highs and lows of being a college student at the university. Student persistence is in the forefront of higher education concerns (Reason, 2009). Persistence occurs when students successfully integrate into the college setting academically and socially (Tinto, 1975). Tinto’s Theory of Student Departure states that the more students integrate into the life of the college, the more successful they will be and the more likely the student will remain in school until graduation.
