What is mercy? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, mercy means “compassion or forbearance shown especially to an offender or to one subject to one's power.” In the bible, it is said, “Then the King will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” (Matthew 25:34-36). Jesus says that if we do these to anyone in need, we do it to Him and inherit the Kingdom of God. An unlikely spot to see mercy is war, right? With the primitive weapons in this time period, you had better odds of throwing your gun at your target and hitting them rather than actually getting a good shot. However, British soldier Patrick Ferguson was considered to have the best ability with a gun. He followed wartime rules that were in place then, but we today disregard, such as never shooting an enemy soldier who was unaware of your presence. Seems like today's snipers would be considered disgusting monsters in the 1700’s. Ferguson took place in the Battle of Brandywine. In the middle of the battle, he noticed two men on horses riding by.
