A fragile bond that is hard to break, a fragile bond that no one else can help fix, a fragile bond between father and son. The relationship between a father and a son might not always be loving and cherishable but one that helps prepare the son to understand right from wrong. In the Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, Baba, the main character’s father, expects a lot from his son Amir, but never truly accepts who Amir is. Amir tries to fix this broken relationship with his father but it does not work simply because it is not Amir’s fault, but feels guilty he is the reason of his mother’s death and father’s disappointment. Amir tries to do everything he can to receive love but nothing really comes from it. Amir feels the result of his mother’s death is the main reason as to why Baba does not seem to provide affection to him. He also claims he does not want to be a ghost in his own house, wants to be worthy in his father’s eyes, go on outings with his father, and to have his father’s attention. Amir tries countless times to connect and talk with his father but Amir is rejected. On page 4, Baba was with his friends in the “smoking room” and Amir asked if he could sit with them. Baba later says “Go on, now,...This is grown-ups’ time. Why don’t you go read one of those books of yours?”. Amir feels a sense of rejection and unimportance as his love for Baba is not returned. Baba does not seem to worry about Amir, as if he has more important responsibilities and commitments. Amir then tries to prove himself worthy to Baba and participating in the Kite fighting tournament. Amir says Baba was used to winning and he should expect the same from his son. Amir then goes on saying “I was going to win,...bring it home and show it to Baba...show him once and for all that his son was worthy “(56).
