What was behind the door? The short story The Lady or the Tiger made by Frank Stockton, tells a story about a princess having a lover that was a commoner and the king finding out about their relationship. The lover had to face judgment because the king was a man of exuberant fancy and withal of authority. The lover had to face a sentence by going to the area and choosing between two doors. One door has a Tiger; the other has a woman. The princess can direct her lover to a tiger or a woman which she hates. The story ends with the reader having to decide the fate of the man but the evidence points to a clear conclusion. The princess couldn’t bare to see her lover with another woman and directed her lover to the door with a tiger behind it. The story clearly says the princess hates the woman behind one of the doors. The story states, “The girl was lovely, but she had dared to raise her eyes to the loved one of the princess; and, with all the intensity of the savage blood transmitted to her through long lines of wholly barbaric ancestors, she hated the woman who blushed and trembled behind that silent door.” How could the princess direct her lover to such a person that she hated so much?
