What makes a great leader? George Washington and Frank R. Stockton answered this question in Washington’s Farewell Address and The Lady or The Tiger by showing the 2 sides of leadership and how they lead in power. Washington is an amazing example of a kind of leader that listens to the people, takes responsibility for their actions, and wants what is best for their citizens. On the other hand, in Stockton’s “The Lady or The Tiger,” the king is a leader who only cares about his own enjoyment, which is proved when he sends people accused of committing crimes into his arena to pick a door that reveals either a woman to be his bride or a vicious tiger that will maul him to his death. From the speech we can tell he is a good leader because he is thinking about the future of the nations and not just himself because he warns them about what would happen if they were to not unify. We can also tell that he cares about the nations because if he were not a good leader he wouldn’t care whether the nations unified or if they stayed separate because he would just care about himself.
