Opening the door could mean life or death. A hungry tiger could come out and tear the young man to shreds, but there is also the possibility of a beautiful maiden standing there to married. The short story of “The Lady or the Tiger” by Frank R. Stockton takes place in the very olden times. In a castle, lived a semi-barbaric king and his daughter. The princess had a secret affair with a young man for many months, but the man was cast in prison where he was sent to the king’s arena. The princess told him which door to pick and he trusted her. Involved in this story is the semi-barbaric justice system. The story makes you question the powerfulness of love and as well as reflects your personal morals. When the young man opened the door it was the tiger that came out because of the princess’ jealousy towards the maiden behind the other door and her personality trait of being semi-barbaric. …show more content…

She is very jealous not just because of the maiden’s beauty, but of how close she is getting to him. “Often had she seen or imagined that she had seen this fair creature throwing glances of admiration upon the person of her lover, and sometimes she thought these glances were perceived, and even returned” (Stockton 14). What made her even more upset is that she may be attracting her lover’s eye. As well as the maiden is purposely flirting with him, to make her upset. “It was one of the fairest and loveliest of the damsels of the court who had been selected as the reward of the youth, should he be proved innocent of the crime aspiring to one so far above him; and the princess hated her” (Stockton 14).
