The Lady With The Dog is a short story written by Anton Checkhov in 1899. It is about love and a feeling of loneliness and emptiness. It is also about people who make wrong decisions and live in such a society where it is not easy to end a marriage just because of being unhappy in it. The main characters are Dmitri and Anna and they are staying in Yalta separately. Although they are different at first glance, they have many similarities.
Dmitri is a man in his late thirties and he is a man with special characteristics. “In his appearance, in his character, in his whole nature, there was something attractive and elusive which allured women and disposed them in his favor; he knew that, and some force seemed to draw him, too, to them” (Checkhov 2). She escapes to Yalta to have a rest from her boring husband. This pair recognizes each other at first glance and it is desire at first sight. All of this seems to be superficial, but both of them fall in love. Anna doesn’t think of their developing relationship as something wrong:” I despise myself and don't attempt to justify myself. It's not my husband but myself I have deceived. And not only just now; I have been deceiving myself for a long time” (Checkhov 6). The relationship between Anna and Dmitri never ends.
