Origin and Background

When an Elder first initiates a new Wiccan or pagan, they would pass on the cautionary words of ''Ever mind the Rule of Three.'' In the book called, High Magic’s Aid, you can find the earliest incarnation of the law of three written by, Gerald Gardner. This was published in 1949, in the form of ‘‘Mark well, when thou receivest good, so equally art bound to return threefold.’’ Then it appeared in 1975 as a poem published in a magazine. We believe The Law of Three to be what you send out will come back to you threefold. Let us start here. What does threefold mean? By definition, it means three times as great. That means good or bad whatever you think, act, do a spell, or send out will come back to you three times as great. In some paths like Correllian, the Law of Three is, what you send out will come back to you as many times as it takes you to learn from it. Some take this literally, as three times, where others take it symbolically. Most covens take it literally. So what is the difference between literally and symbolically? Literally means it will come back to you exactly three times. Symbolically believes it will take multiple times to come back to you. This leaves us with the few who do not believe it all. Ok so back to the initiates, should they be scared or not? This is why it is the most argued about law in modern paganism. Some say the reason for this was to keep them from doing harm to others or performing negative magic, without thinking about the consequences first. Where others say it is a scare tactic.
