A huge part of the Honduran culture are the legends that the people of the land tell over and over. These legends go back centuries and even though they are legends to many people, there is haunting and thrilling truth to many people. Not only to Hondurans but to many countries around the region that share similar legends to Honduras. The legends are so popular and historic that there is even a radio broadcast in the country that tells different stories about many legends. There is also a section in the newspaper articles that are published in Honduras that depict the beings that have roamed the country for centuries. Every child grows up learning about the dangerous and elusive Duende. There are even certain parts of the country that are known to be the home of El Duende. Where he is said to be around most of his time, these places are called La Piedra Del Duende. Honduras is an extremely mountainous country. Every way you turn there is only mountain after mountain in every part of the country. In the mysterious and hidden parts, which are many, there is said to be a small dwarf living in caves. He is said to be small in height, ugly, wears a pointy hat and he always carries with him a little guitar. He only targets females who he finds beautiful to him. The people say that the very first sign that El Duende has noticed you is that you will hear very beautiful guitar music. It will be almost soft but still very present. After hearing the guitar a few times he will throw little rocks or small twigs your way when he sees you talking to the opposite sex. Legend has it that there are two dogs, they only appear at night time. If you have ever been to Honduras, you would notice that the streets going into other towns are mountainous and dark. There is said to be a black dog that appears in front of your car, this dog is said thought to be an evil spirit in animal form. The dog has glowing red eyes and he walks slowly in front of your car. The driver must never try to speed ahead of El Cadejo or else it is said he would take you. Patience and trying to remain calm is the only thing that can be done. The black dog will go away once the lighter Cadejo comes, where there is evil there is good. However, the lighter dog does not always appear. There have been many reported cases across Honduras where many people encounter it at night time, and all of them report the dog to walk slowly and to have a very strong and dangerous presence. The people are well informed of this story and so no one dares speed by it. There are also many other legends about how it also tends to appear to men more than women, but particularly but not limited to single young men. Reports say that when they feel it behind them, it follows slowly. When it feels far away it is actually extremely close, and when it feels close by it is actually at a further distance.
