This book in The Odyssey mainly highlights the absolute massacre of the suitors in the hall performed by Odysseus. In my group, I had been assigned the category of effectiveness. Similar to most if not all books in The Odyssey, book 22 contains several instances of figurative language to spice the story up. Not only that, but the book can detail many events in-depth, giving it a more drawn-out and emphasized feel. For example, before Antinous is killed by Odysseus, the book is quoted, “the cup was in his finger; the wine was even at his lips; did he dream of death?”(Homer 22, 8-10).
In this passage from The Odyssey, Homer uses an epic simile comparing Odysseus’ crew to calves and Odysseus to a cow and a second simile comparing Odysseus to Ithaca in order to portray the sense of reliance and loyalty the men have for their leader. In the book, Odysseus has just returned from Circe’s palace where some of the crew had disappeared. Since the men chosen to venture into Circe’s home did not return, the rest of the crew thought Odysseus would also not make it back to the ship. When Homer writes that the men are, “bucking out of their pens, lowing nonstop, jostling, rushing round their mothers (455-456),” he conveys the men’s desparation to get to Odysseus. The phrase, “bucking out of their pens (455),” refers to the fact that Odysseus’ crew is trapped and helpless without him.
Corrections 40 I chose E. I, II, and III because I believed that the dead do not ever have to obey the living. Although that fact may be true, the question asked if that fact could be inferred from the story, and no points in the story back up that fact. The correct answer is C. I and II only because both I. must be appeased by the living (lines 53-56: “burn me with whatever armor I have, build a barrow for me on the seashore...and plant over my grave the oar I used to row”) and II. can cause harm to come to the living (lines 52-53: “or I may bring heaven’s anger upon you”) were shown throughout the text.
The ‘Odyssey’ is a well known book based around Greek myths and Odysseus’ journey back home as he attains help from the Gods. In ‘The Odyssey’, Homer is able to use figurative language to express a recurring theme of vengeance. In Homer's ‘Odyssey’, he manages to express a theme of vengeance by how Odysseus is struggling with the consequences of revenge and how he deals with that. In book twenty-two Odysseus confronts the suitors about trying to seduce his wife while he was gone, when he reveals himself as Odysseus some of the suitors immediately try to compensate for the wrongs they’ve done.

The universal human experience portrayed in the Odyssey of connecting with other people is shown through Odysseus's struggle with honest, loyalty, and From some of the events that happen in the Odyssey, it is clear that Odysseus struggles with honesty. The Odyssey is often cited as an epitome of the hero’s journey and the monomyth. The hero of the story, Odysseus is on a 10 year battle homeward from the Trojan War to see his wife and son again. With the help divine intervention, Odysseus is able to return home and save his wife from the evil suitors who have continuously tried to win her. One could easily argued that Odysseus is an exemplar of the hero, but there is another story: Odysseus is the opposite of a hero and is not worthy to be called such. He is the villain where the gods are the hero.
After reading, I believe that the human characters were responsible for the progression, resolution, and overall plot in the book. Understandably, many would believe that the gods were the ones responsible for what happened; but the gods create and formulate scenarios for the humans to tackle. For instance, there are times when the humans do not obey the gods’ orders; For example, when Odysseus was once instructed by Leucothoe, a goddess who resides in the sea, to leave his raft he decided not to because he did not think he would be able to reach land if he were to.
For our annotations of The Odyssey of Homer, the teacher asked us to critically think and identify significant topics within each chapter in order to comprehend the story as a whole. Many useful tactics and resources given were to benefit us throughout the whole book. Utilizing resources such as study guides and highlighters made annotations consistent and efficient. It was required that we had at least three annotations, with critical thinking, done on each page. The purpose for this assignment was to understand the process of annotating because, for some, annotating is a new concept or a topic that was barely touched on in middle school.
While many would argue that the human species officially embarked on the journey to “conquer” nature at the inception of the Industrial Revolution, with men bending nature to suit their purposes on an unprecedented scale, the seeds of such sentiments to surpass nature with created culture had been planted hundreds of thousands of years ago. With a casual overview of human history, one can see that the idea of bending elements of nature to human will rose as early as hundreds of thousands of years ago, perhaps when homo erectus first started cooking food with fire. The idea of the cultural death, the burning of one’s body to prevent one from being consumed by the elements of nature that occupies a most illustrious position in the Homeric world, can be dated back to roughly 20,000 years ago (Lake Mungo remains), the currently earliest recorded act of cremating the dead. Homer frequently juxtaposes aspects of nature and culture in his work. In the Odyssey, Homer juxtaposes the society of Cyclops with the civilized human society, demonstrating the stark differences between a naturalistic and a cultural society.

The Odyssey would be less memorable without Homer’s masterful use of figurative language. This poem can only stand the test of time when the figurative language is used to help readers relate to the text no matter what time period they come from. Figurative language in the text has made the story as a whole more interesting and has made countless readers engaged by this tale of, in Homer’s own words, “that man skilled in all ways of contending.” (p. 813,
Stories throughout time implement features which help push the communication of a deeper purpose. In order to achieve these characteristics, authors and storytellers compose their stories with the use of language styles such as stylistic techniques, figurative language, syntax. The Odyssey is an epic poem that communicates the travels of Odysseus on his way back home from war. This epic poem is used to not just tell a story, but also explain and promote the ancient Greek concepts and morals, which are highlighted in Book 9. Over the course of Book 9, Homer utilizes several stylistic techniques such as juxtaposition and diction to communicate characterization.
Diction and imagery are very important components to a story. It is the way that the author displays their feelings through the character. Homer uses very vivid shifts in tone, sometimes creating room for the reader to learn a lesson. In one of Homer’s famous books, “The Odyssey,” he uses diction, imagery, and tone to show that everything does not always go as planned. Wishing to escape the cyclops’ bondage, Odysseus tries to get out of trouble and assumes that he and his men are safe by lying to the Cyclops.
