On April 20, 1999, the unimaginable occurred at Columbine High School in the small town of Littleton, Colorado. A school shooting, carried out by, then senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold took the entire community by storm. With 15 deaths, including the perpetrators, and 24 non-fatal injuries, the memories of this horrific massacre will forever resonate in the minds of all. With a meticulously thought out plan, the two shooters prepared guns and bombs in order to perform the sickening act. Families, the FBI, local officials, psychologists, and more spent a multitude of time trying to figure out the reasoning as to what motivated the two boys to kill and cause so much pain to others.
Columbine, by Dave Cullen is a non-fiction book documenting the horrific massacre which took place in Littleton, Colorado on April 20, 1999. Not only does the writer give great detail about the shooting itself, he also gives and in depth look into the lives of the killers, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, and their victims. The focus of this book is for the author to attempt to bring to light what really happened and hopefully gain better understanding as to why it all took place. Cullen, a journalist, begins an extensive nine year research in order to achieve awareness of the happenings before, during and after this tragic event. Entries from the perpetrators personal journals, stories from the ones who witnessed the shootings first hand, countless interviews from the victim’s families, as well as multiple other pieces of information give the reader an extremely up close and personal surrounding Columbine.
On April 20, 1999, a school shooting occurred in Colorado, Columbine High School. Cassie Bernall was shot fatally, leading to death. Other survivors in the library never heard Eric Harris ask her if she believed in God. Beside him kneeling down in her face hearing her pray. All he said was “Peek-a-boo” Before shooting Cassie.
The adults in Salem, Oregon in Stephen Karam’s Speech & Debate had good reason to treat the teens as if they were children. If Diwata, Solomon, and Howie were an accurate representation of the other students at the school, it is no wonder that the parents, teachers, and school board sought to exercise an abundance of control and provide too much guidance in their lives. The three teens dealt with “grown-up” issues throughout the play, but they tried to tackle them in characteristically childish ways. In the opening scene of the play, viewers are introduced to Howie, an openly gay 18-year-old.
Allusions? Cullen describes the impact that Harris and Klebold had on other school shooting, particularly Seung-Hui Cho’s siege at Virginia Tech. “He understand only that Eric and Dylan left an impression” (Cullen 348). Cullen’s inclusion of this other shooting demonstrates that the shooters left behind a legacy, albeit one of tragedy.
The Sandy Hook shooting was the second most deadly shooting in the U.S and left many families damaged after this unimaginable event took place. The students and teachers that went under the shooting were only focused on surviving through a horrific event and wondering if they would ever see their families again. First graders witnessed their friends in the next room being massacred, and unthinkable image. This event left the nation in a scare, causing everyone to look at gun and going to school a different way. Shooter and murderer Adam Lanza took the lives of many containing 30.47 pounds of ammunition.
When Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold terrorized Columbine High School nearly twenty years ago, the shooting shocked the nation. However, as the media incorrectly reported- the attack on Columbine High School was not an intended school shooting, but rather an elaborate terror plot with the hopes of killing hundreds of people. Everyone, especially the media, tries to interpret why the shooter killed their victims, or why they felt the need to end others’ lives and their own. It was the 50th anniversary of the mass shooting of texas at austin that left 14 people dead and 32 people wounded. Then there 20 kids killed at the sandy hook shooting. Over the past two years nearly 15 states have debated legislation to make it easier for school staff and students to carry a firearm during school hours in the school building. Schools now all they have in the classroom in case a shooter came in is a hammer and rope now the hammer will break the window but it will take a while to get all the kids out but if a teacher had a gun then we won't have to break any windows even though breaking the windows will just alert the shooter to which classroom they should strike first. Because the sound of hammer breaking glass the man would just think well they are trying to get out well i will stop them .
Media Portrayal of School Shootings,” “the researchers analyze 157 articles that mention Columbine and out of these 157 articles, only 33 contain detailed information on the event itself. The remaining 124 only make references to Columbine.” When a new shooting occurs, the media would often recall old case, such as “Columbine”, as their reference. Nevertheless, they would not explain the detail of the incident, they would only mention the name of the incident. Besides, the media’s purpose of doing this is they want to perpetuate the public fear.
Evidence shows they were planning for a year to bomb the school in an attack similar to the Oklahoma City bombing (Columbine Shooting, 2018). "Harris was described as the callously brutal mastermind, while Klebold was a quivering depressive who journaled obsessively about love and attended the Columbine prom three days before opening fire" (Columbine Shooting, 2018). Police have been trained more thoroughly for school shooting now that they are happening more often. They are putting the police through real scenario situations of an active-shooter. After this school shooting occurred many schools promoted a zero-tolerance policy for disruptive behavior and threats of violence from students.
My application would not be complete without mentioning my favorite place in the world, Raven Court. The little cul-de-sac is home to my two brothers, my one sister, and my best friends. Less than thrilled, I moved in the summer going into third grade. While this new house actually fit my entire family, I did not want to change schools or leave my friends behind. Fitting in was not my forte, as I was the only girl in all of Clifton Park Baseball and could never pick out a matching outfit.
