One example of figurative language in Laurie Hale Anderson’s book “Speak” is when Melinda decides to rid her garden of all weeds, and does some spring cleaning after it finally stops raining during May. Around the same time, Melinda is realizing that she wants to make some new changes in her life and in this figurative language example, Melinda’s life is her garden. She decides first to rake the leaves “suffocating the bushes” ; Melinda is ridding the demons from herself on the first layer of her skin. She says that she has to “fight the bushes (her problems)” and the bushes don’t like getting cleaned out but it is something one has to do if one makes

“What world does a dead individual belong to?”, quoted in paragraph four of "The Ghost Map." "The Night-Soil Men" is an excerpt from the novel, "The Ghost Map," writing by Steven B. Johnson. The time is set around the 1850’s of London, Europe. In London, this considered to be one the most unhygienic cities in the world. The excerpt from "The Night-Soil Men" has many examples of literary elements, figurative language, and rhyme scheme.
Most well written and descriptive stories use many disparate tools to make it better. The author of the story The Veldt used figurative language, imagery, and diction to foreshadow the tragic ending of the story. In the end the children use the lions from Africa to slaughter their parents ,and you can kind of guess that the children are planning something evil because of the descriptions and figurative language in the story. The children give off a very negative aura throughout the whole story that leads you to believe that something cynical is occuring.
Helen Keller once said "...although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it." This quotation means that in life, you come to find yourself in many struggles, but there is always a sense of accomplishment over such problems. The reason I agree with this quote is because such triumph can only be accomplished after the fact of the occurrence of a struggle. The realistic fiction book, Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, is a perfect example of my interpretation of the quote. The author uses conflict, figurative language and characterization to show that this quote is true.
For instance, the author tells how the poodle used to be a hunting dog and the reason why its hair was cut with a lions main was because then the dog could swim better. FINISH As the reader going through the essay each paragraph leads into the next creating a nice flow throughout the essay. I found that the organization of the essay was chronological and made sense as a whole. Each paragraph was evidence that supported the argument/conclusion. Although I thought there was too much evidence to support the argument the organization of the essay was spot on.
In the Jeannette Walls memoir Glass Castle, the author expounds on situations about education found beyond the classroom walls by using life lessons such as survival skills and moral lessons such as acceptance and forgiveness through figurative language by using imagery. One way Jeannette walls describe education beyond the classroom walls is through a life lesson such as survival skill. At a tender age of five jeannette learned to shoot guns and throw a knife; skills like this could be helpful if you were surviving in the wilderness. If society takes the time to analyze these actions, individuals can figure out the feelings of one another in a certain moment. “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson delineates the thoughts and feelings of a teenage girl, Melinda, as she navigates the highs and lows of high school, while carrying the weight of a past traumatic event. In the passage from the book, “Speak”, author Laurie Halse Anderson uses different types of figurative language such as similes and metaphors, as well as repetition to reveal Melinda’s negative thoughts on her past and current feelings about high school.
In John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath the theme of comparing the rich and poor occurs consistently throughout the book. On page 266 when Casy spoke about the rich man with a million acres, he made a statement about even though he owns so much land and has so much money, he may feel poor inside. Steinbeck uses repetition by restating the word “poor” many times allowing the reader to comprehend how the word ‘poor” means more than just the lack of money. He also compares the rich man and Mrs. Wilson. The man being who everyone desired, rich and owning a lot of land.

The speakers of both poems reflect on their mornings with similar types of figurative language, but implement those types using different techniques. “Five A.M.” uses flowing syntax, peaceful diction and positive imagery, while “Five Flights Up” uses choppy syntax, bland diction and negative imagery. The different uses of figurative language in the two poems creates opposing ideas. The speaker in “Five A.M.” suggests that with a new day comes a refreshed, inherently good humanity. In contrast, “Five Flights Up” focuses on how humans have generally missed the mark of perfection.
Many people praise and mourn about different things, mostly stuff they like very dearly. Except that mourning is being sad over something they lost that meant alot to one. In the poem “One Art” Elizabeth Bishop evokes praise, mockery and mourning, by using language that shows a carefree tone and a passionate mood. She also fulfills her purpose by utalyzing repetition in her structure.
I took the time to write out an outline for this essay to help manage the chaos that is my writing, unlike my other essays for the course. As I said before, I have learned to question the structure of my paragraphs. For example: when I was revising the Composing Process essay, I noticed that a set of paragraphs could be rearranged and partially rewritten to improve the structure and make the essay flow better. However, I would argue that my Justification video assignment demonstrates my assertion better than my revised essays. From the beginning, I laid out a clear path that my Justification video needed to follow.
In 1880s, women in America were trapped by their family because of the culture that they were living in. They loved their family and husband, but meanwhile, they had hard time suffering in same patterns that women in United States always had. With their limited rights, women hoped liberation from their family because they were entirely complaisant to their husband. Therefore, women were in conflicting directions by two compelling forces, their responsibility and pressure. In A Doll’s House, Ibsen uses metaphors of a doll’s house and irony conversation between Nora and Torvald to emphasize reality versus appearance in order to convey that the Victorian Era women were discriminated because of gender and forced to make irrational decision by inequity society.
My expectations coming into the course were high and remained high throughout the duration of the course. The essays I wrote in the class really challenged me to progress in my writing skills. The illustration essay really served as an example of what not to do when writing at a college level. My approach of the essay was really misunderstood and grammatically incorrect.
