This semester I was exposed to several types of literature. When evaluating the stories I realized how much it changed my reading styles. Three stories that influenced me the most are, A Goodman is Hard to Find, “The Little Red Wheelbarrow”, and The Diary of a Madman. These stories Made me question my beliefs, reminded me of myself, and helped me choose a minor in college.
A Goodman is Hard to Find made me question my faith. A lot of things I’ve been introduced to have tried challenged my faith with god but I never let it get to me. The argument between the grandmother and the Misfit opened my questioning to whether God is real. I read this story during a hard time in my life. I lost a friend and thought of the things the Misfit told the grandmother. For example, if god is real then he wouldn’t let evil prevail. There was a lot more to this poem than what was discussed in class. The poem was structured to give a physical aspect to the story or to show the wheelbarrow’s real strength. The poem had a total of for couplets. Each couplet began with a longer phrase and ends with a small base. The long phrases represents the load the wheelbarrow had to carry, and the small base represents the wheelbarrow. Like me the wheelbarrow has a lot of responsibilities. Like the wheelbarrow I am responsible for doing many things and I don’t receive any credit for the things I’ve done. I am overlooked when in need for something, but at the end of the day I’m still there to help others. Another aspect that reminded me of the wheelbarrow was the symbolism of neglect. The wheelbarrow was left out in the rain, but still was able to do good things. I grew up in the ghetto with nine people living in on house at once. The rain the wheelbarrow went through reminded me of the constant struggles I dealt with
