Sherman Alexie uses characterization and symbolism in his short story “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven” to address the bad done by separation and classification of mankind. The fact that people are not equal is not an excuse to classify them according to their social economic status, intelligence, religion, or ethnicity. Through the main character in the story a young Spokane Indian, Alexie shows the dilemma of belongingness and stereotypes in all kind of people. For example, he uses to call people according if they are white or Indians. He does not care about learning their names or mentioning them; in addition, when the police tell him that he does not fit in the profile of the neighborhood, he thinks, “I didn’t really fit the profile of the country but I knew it would just get me into trouble” (Alexie 10). This idea shows how people feel about their sense of belongingness, and the gap between his culture and the culture of the country has just increased exponentially. He is not a real American because he is just an Indian. However, even he is in his own reservation with his family, the narrator says, “I was one of those Indians who was supposed to make it, to rise above the rest of the reservation like a fucking eagle or something” (Alexie 10). Consequently, many American who come from different cultures feel a lost in their identities and where they belong. Moreover, the dreams are a reflect of the horror that many people are living in that precise moment. Finally the used of newspaper and television is a powerful tool to show the reality or hide
