Indians’ sport In the book The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven by Alexie Sherman, the Indians living in the reservation have an unpleasant and hopeless life. The majority of the Indians are either described as unsuccessful or poor. Moreover, most of them are also struggling with alcohol or many other issues. Basketball, however, is practically the only chance and hope for the Indians to become someone. First of all, it’s important to understand that the Indians living on the reservation aren’t valorized at all in this book. Most of the time, Alexie describes the Indians as poor, drunk, lazy, unskilled, stupid or violent. The only Indians valorized in those stories are the good basketball players. Julius Windmaker for example is one of the most talented basketball players in the reservation. Everyone believes in him and wants him to “make it all the way” (p.49) like Victor would say. The Indians love to talk about those gifted basketball players like Julius because it gives them a feeling of hope: “Everybody told their favorite Julius Windmaker stories, too Times like that, on a reservation, a basketball game felt like a funeral and wake all rolled up together” (p.51) Moreover basketball is really important for the Indians since the talented basketball players are the heroes of the reservation. People talk about them for years without forgetting them: “A reservation hero is a hero forever. In fact, their status grows over the years as the stories are told and retold.” (p.48) Silas Sirius and Lucy are another good example of that. Everyone is still talking about Silas in the reservation even though he is not playing anymore. He didn’t even make it threw high school but people remember him because he was good at basketball: “And there’s the famous case of Silas Sirius, who made one move and scored one basket in his entire basketball career. People still talk about it.” (P.47). Lucy is an important basketball character since she is the new hope of the reservation. She is so good that she has to play with …show more content…

During the movie, Suzy Song talks about Victor’s father and how he was always talking about Victor. She said that Victor’s dad really loved him and that he wanted to go back home one day. She also said that Arnold was gloating to her about how good his son was at basketball. Arnold even lied about winning a basketball game with Victor just to make him look good. He could have talked about anything else like how smart and generous he was but instead he talked about that basketball game because for him basketball was the most important. He also said the same thing to Thomas build-the-fire in that movie. He told him that Victor would only be great in basketball and nothing else. He believed that being good in basketball was more then
