The Loss, Gain, and Change of Want and Need Gluttony: Noun; Habitual greed or excess in eating. Synonyms: Greed, insatiability. Gluttony, one of the seven deadly sins as mentioned in some religions, normally has a negative connotation. Say a man buys twelve doughnuts was originally going to buy a salad. His want for the sugar turned to a need due to gluttony. This wiped the need of the salad from his mind entirely. It is interesting how easily the wants and needs of a person can change and switch. However, how does this happen? Better yet, how do we make the choice between want and need in the first place. Well, we decide this by evaluating different aspects of our lives and they can change due to changes in these aspects. Age is one of the more prominent factors that help determine our wants and needs; It cannot be prevented or stalled. As age goes on, old men and women might give away worldly possessions and die “...as a saint might die” (Saikoku, Paragraph 1).
