The author of this book is Emma Donoghue. She was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1969 and is the youngest of eight kids and was the only one of her siblings to have a literary career, like her father. She has switched around from living in England, Ireland and Canada for many years. She currently lives in London, Ontario with her partner, Chris and two kids Finn and Una and calls herself “Irish Canadian” even though she lived in Ireland for the first 20 years of her life and only now lives in Canada. She is religious but doesn’t like to talk about it in detail since it is such a diverse and controversial topic. She has a BA in English and French from the University College Dublin, as well as a PhD on the friendship between men and women in eighteenth-century English fiction from the University of Cambridge. She writes in many genres including, fiction, drama and literary history. The book is about a gay couple who comes together with a lesbian couple to co-parent seven kids and four pets. If featuring two gay couples at the heart of the story isn’t enough to have the book be considered diverse, then throw in parents who are multicultural and racial as well as kids who have disabilities and one who is transgender. When the nytimes.com said, “to call this family diverse is an understatement bordering on euphemism,” they were not exaggerating. Donoghue says that she always tries to keep in mind diversity when she is writing and thinks to herself “does this character have to be a white man?” This stems from her being lesbian and that the LGBT+ community and people of color don't usually have much representation in literature, especially from when she started writing around
