The speaker, J. Alfred Prufrock, expresses his negative feelings and trust issues toward women in “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” through jealousy, failed past experiences, realizing that he is not compatible with some women, and insecurity. Throughout the poem Prufrock belittles women, for instance, “In the room the women come and go. Talking of Michelangelo.” (Eliot, Lines 13 and 14). In the quote the speaker is saying how women do not stay in a place for long representing how women love someone and then move on. Prufrock seems to mention Michelangelo in envy because of jealousy that the women in the room are talking about another guy. In lines 35 and 36, Prufrock mentions the same quote as above, which the repetition represents how Prufrock does not trust women in life and he gets jealous of other men and their success with women. The repetition representing the distrust with women is expressed through the poem by belittling the gender in various life experiences.

In lines 79 and 80 Prufrock says, “Should I, after tea and cakes and ices, - Have strength to force the moment to its crisis,” he seems like he is on a date and doesn’t seem compatible with the woman and wants to end it. Also, in line 84, Prufrock says, “I have seen the moment of my greatness flicker,” which in my interpretation Prufrock is saying how he realizes that he already went through the great stages of his life, and now that he has grown older, he is lonely. Prufrock has trust issues with women from problems earlier in the poem, and once he gets the chance he does not have enough confidence in himself to be with someone. In line 84 Prufrock shows his self-consciousness by saying, “I have seen the moment of my greatness flicker,” meaning he has already lived through the great moments of his life, and now he is confused on how to
