In the passage, “The Lovely Stones” by Conde Nast Digital, Christopher Hitchens argue that the original Parthenon sculptures should be returned to its origin, Greece. In the passage, Hitchens use contrast, historical event and emotion to convince readers to take his side. In order to expose the people’s violation toward the Parthenon, Hitchens uses contrast in the passage. According to the “The Lovely Stones” Hitchens says, “The great classicist A. W. Lawrence... once remarked of the Parthenon that it is the one building in the world which may be assessed as absolutely right.” This shows that Hitchens uses this quotes to represent the beauty and glamor of Parthenon to shows to everyone that people are damaging this beauty. Around 19th century some parts of the Parthenon were occupied by the British people. However, some parts of the sculpture have been carried away and preserved in the British government. Then Hitchens indicates that although Greek was able to protect the Parthenon in the past because they allowed itself to become very dirty and polluted in the 20th century and as a result, Parthenon was nastily eroded by acid rain. However, the author wants Parthenon should be returned its origin. According to the “The Lovely Stones,” Hitchens says, “but gradually and now impressively, the Greeks have been living up to their responsibilities”. This shows that Greece become more responsible and right now they able to protect the Parthenon also they are able to take care of beauty Parthenon as well. So, Parthenon must be returned its original land because the author use historical event to convey that British are not able to protect the beauty of Parthenon, therefore uses an emotion to convey people that Greece is completely changed and they should get one more chance.
